Mum of two felines

Member Since 2015
It's been awhile since I've been on the board. Woody went into remission inJanuary of 2016. About 6 months ago we noticed he was losing weight. We took him in and everything looked A Okay except his weight and dehydration. Well, we've been going in the last 2 weeks to give fluids and finally took blood tests . Here are his numbers:

GLU. 180
BUN. 74
CREA 2.9
BUN/CREA. 26
PHOS 7.3

One vet said he's in hospice, the other vet says he's just beginning CKD. So, they said put him on Hills k/d and give 200 fluids every other day. I am at a loss? Where are we and what do you think?

I have no personal experience but from being on the forum, if he's beginning CKD, I don't think you need the prescription foods for that either. But you'll want less phosphorus foods, I think <200 for Stages 1 and 2 :bookworm:. Hopefully one of the CKD members will chime in :bighug:

If you have the full set of blood work and fill in your labs on the lab tab of the spreadsheet you can tag "Marje and Gracie " She is excellent at reading and deciphering labwork. Once you have it filled out just put "@" in front of her name to tag her.

There are lots of CKD kitties on FDMB so you will be able to get good feedback on how best to proceed. I know most of them advise reading through Tanya's CKD site

that's just barely CKD stage 3... With treatments he could live months to YEARS. not hospice for sure. 200ml of fluids is too much unless your cat is 20 lbs. It's 10ml per pound. so if your cat is 10 lbs, do 100 ml. Overyhydrating can be stressful on his heart. Also the perscription kidney food isn't necessary yet. Just find one lower in Phosphorous and carbs. weruva bff cans are one example of this. At 7.3 I would actually feed a phosperous binder (aluminium hydroxide... look on thrivingpets.com) BTW, very good helpful ckd group is on Facebook called Cats with Chronic Renal Failure.

Thank you! I feel so bad for my kitty. His fur looks awful, he's shedding, his appetite is waning, and he's sleeping so much. I'll back off on his fluids, look for a phosphorous binder, and start trying other foods. I ordered Young Again zero mature since it's on Tanya's site. My vet is so so but she's sold on prescription diets and no anti nausea med, and wants to put him on an anabolic steriod to increase his desire to eat.

The high phosphorus is probably what is causing him to not want to eat. Get that net down and he will be felling a whole lot better. You can get aluminum hydroxide on thrivingpet.com and amazon sells it too. You don't need a perscription. It's a tasteless powder you add to any food they eat.

My cat P value dropped from 7 to 6.2 after about 17 days on the binder. The vet said to put 250mg per day so I sprinkle some each time he has his meal. I have no idea if his wet food is low P since I don't have access to the food listed in the list. I'm so glad the binder is working.
