Late shot?

Hello! I have a two year old cat that has diabetes. He gets shots once in the morning and once in the evening. Would there be any way to give him his morning shot a few hours earlier? I can board him but this severely stressed him out and he quits eating. We want to leave in the middle of the night and return by his evening shot. This is why I was wondering if there was a way to give him his shot early. Thank you for any advice!

If you dose a few hours earlier you'll be adding insulin to the previous dose that's still working. You can either give a reduced dose to account for this (50%?) or, like many of us have done on occasion, skip that evening shot altogether. If your kitty has no recent history of ketones missing a shot shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't missed one of his shots in months and that was an accident when I did. So if I'm leaving early in the morning, then just skip his morning shot altogether?
Thank you for your help!! Some of this is still so new to me and I worry about him a lot.

Yes, I misunderstood. You have the option of skipping that one AM shot. Has he ever had ketones in his urine?

You can buy human urine ketone test strips at any pharmacy and test your kitty's urine at home:

How to test for urine ketones at home:
  • put the end of the test strip right in his urine stream as he's peeing
  • slip a shallow, long handled spoon under his backside to catch a little pee - you don't need much
  • put a double layer of plastic wrap over his favourite part of the litter box and poke some depressions in it too catch pee.
Most test strips have to be dipped and allowed to develop for 15 seconds before viewing the colour change in very good light.

Vets don't usually suggest it unless your kitty has had a bout of diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes. I asked about ketones because skipping an insulin dose for a kitty that has recently had urine ketones is riskier.

If your cat ever had DKA, you would have known it.....cats in DKA are VERY sick and it can cost thousands of dollars and take days (or longer) of ER care to treat ....not always successfully

Just call it a "Furshot" and have a good time on your trip!

LOL!! Thank you!! And he has not had that issue then. Thank goodness!!!
