What do people use for sharps containers?

The one that came with my first vial of PZI is full - I know where to drop it off etc, but confused as to what to use for next round of syringes. If I use a juice/detergent bottle, will the sharps collection accept it or do I need a special container? I'm in NYC. Thanks!

Here's the info for NYC. You can put them in a detergent bottle (leak proof, puncture resistant container) and label it “Home sharps–not for recycling.” Then, you can drop it off or just put it in your regular trash.

It goes in the clipper, I have one too and it holds like 1500 needles so it takes a bit to fill up . I keep looking at it and wondering if it's really going to hold 1500 haha. When it's full you drop it off where you'd drop off any sharps container, I think. :)
It's like a hole punch but you can't empty it out :D

I purchase my containers at Rite Aid. They only cost like $4.

The clipper is amazing. Mine got filled at almost two years exactly (1400-ish), just as they said. By that time the clipper didn't seem to always clip the needle off as cleanly either, so I just got a new one.

I still use a sharps container (I just buy it at Walmart) for lancets and strips, but it lasts much longer than filling it with syringes!

I put the cap back on the syringe. Then I put the syringe in a used plastic 1/2 gallon orange juice container. When full, I screw on the lid and out it goes.

I am super rural.
I asked 3 pharmacies and 2 vets if they would take my full sharps container, all said no, and couldn't tell me where to go. The sharps container I bought says to ship it, but there is no way I'm paying shipping on used needles.
Finally, my county government website had the info I needed. We just take any strong plastic container tape it with the label sharps and leave it at the dump on the counter.
I'm currently filling up old coffee containers with needles.

Ah yes, I've seen some mention using laundry cleaner containers since they're thicker plastic :)

Lol, I go through way more coffee than I do laundry detergent...
That needle clipper thing is neat though! If I run out of my backlog of coffee containers, I may try to purchase that!

Oh my goodness, that needle clipper is under $7.00. I may just get it anyway and go back to using my coffee buckets for crafts.

Yeah, whoever invented it is a genius.....whole lot easier to just clip the needles, toss the syringes and when the clipper is full (in about 2 years), lock it and toss it too!!

Don't have to worry about anybody getting their hands on dirty syringes or using the needles for anything nefarious

Can you clip the lancets too to go in there?
Or is there a separate one for lancets?

Another weird thought, one of those weird 2 am thoughts...
Does anyone know what happens to my sharps in my container after I hand them over to the dump?
Is there a giant landfill just for sharps somewhere?

I use my old sharps container for the lancets....I figure it'll take me about 20 years to fill it up....LOL

Since lancets aren't hollow, they can't be used for anything other than poking holes, so they don't have the problem with abuse that syringes have

I've actually never tried using the clipper on the lancets

I always just threw my lancets in the trash. DH put the little cap back on but my stiff fingers couldn't do that.

I used the same needle clipper for syringes for both cats and it took about two years to fill up. When my visiting DSIL saw it, she was enchanted and we had to go to the nearest pharmacy immediately so she could buy three - she and both my nephews have a rare disorder and have to give themselves daily shots. She was thrilled to be able to get rid of the sharps container. Great invention, indeed!

You might want to consider getting a needle clipper

I absolutely love mine and once the needle is clipped, you can throw the rest of the syringe in the regular trash
Oh wow this is so cool! Just ordered mine. :) our container with needles is super full and we were just wondering what we do with it or if the pharmacy will take it. (6 months worth of needles). This will work out so much better :)
