What are considered good numbers?

Are numbers in the 3's (mmol/L) too low ? I've been monitoring my cat and for almost a week I haven't given him any insulin because his numbers have been good. Although sometimes they're in the low 3's. Is that considered too low? This morning I checked after he had eaten his breakfast (Fancy Feast Pate) and his sugars were at 3.2.

have you thought about setting up a spread sheet - track your kitty's BG numbers and to enable us to help you interpreting it?
There instructions are HERE but there are people who are capable of helping you out in a more practical way - my SS was set up by somebody else in the Group and I 've been using it ever since.

I am very sorry but unless I can see the BG numbers in sequence in the Spread Sheet I am not able to offer an opinion...

If I am to answer I'll need to know :

the current insulin type and its dose and how it is administered;
do you test before he eats?
do you test prior to injecting?
are you outside of the US and refer to the BG reading in the World measuring system?
what type of glucometer are you using?

Again, sorry, need to have more info to offer an opinion...

@Chris & China her name is Chris and she is frequently online. I cannot remember how exactly I came to ask her about the SS but she's done it for me and she also explained how to use it. I tagged her and as soon as read this post she'll help you out, I am sure.

If you are getting numbers in the 3 mmol ( low 50s US) then your kitty does not need any insulin at this point. Are you using a human meter or a pet meter?

Was your kitty diagnosed as diabetic? If so when was this and what sort of insulin was prescribed?


ETA I went back and looked at your earlier postings. Your kitty was on Caninsulin and then started getting very low numbers.

Have you been off insulin since the above post? If so Zoey is well on the way to being diet controlled. Some kitties will normally run lower than others when not on insulin. Since you are not giving insulin at this point you don't have to worry about the lower numbers.

yep, he was on caninsulin and then after the recommendations from members on here that I not give him the insulin I stopped and his levels have been great without it (I check on a human meter). I'm just wondering if now he's TOO low! From my google searches I seems like it's an okay number (although on the lower end) for a cat that's not on insulin. Just a little confused about what numbers are in the normal range. I'm going to keep track for another week and then talk to my vet. He definitely doesn't need the insulin though.

Readings on a human meter will be lower than on a pet meter. So the 3's mmol is a perfectly fine number when he is not on insulin. Normal numbers on a human meter will range from 2.8 to 7 mmol, so Zoey is doing just great!
