Fancy Feast Classics still diabetic-friendly?

Hi, I'm thinking of switching my cat from Wellness to Fancy Feast per my vet's suggestion (higher protein). I've read on here that maybe these used to be lower-carb than they are now? Do people here still use FF, what flavors, and what are the current carb counts? Thanks!
 
Hi. Dr Lisa's food chart was updated a few months ago, so I would think it is pretty current. When searching for foods, she recommends that you 'start with protein minimum of 40, fat maximum of 50, carb max of 10, and for cats with kidney issues....phos less than 300.' Fancy Feast Classics have a bit more fat and phos than that, but a lot of people here feed them to their cats. I am currently using the Chicken Feast as one of the primary wets for my girls because they will eat it which is more than I can say for a lot of the other kinds I have tried. Of course, they will only eat it a day or two then I have to switch to something else for a day or two then switch back, but that's another topic...
 
Same thing here. That's pretty much all our cats are given - Fancy Feast classics - the pate varieties. They love
chicken
ocean whitefish and tuna

I supplement with cooked chicken that is diced. And Little Dude still gets some crunch. I like the fact that FF has 8 or 10 varieties, and each can is pretty inexpensive. I try to ensure each cat has a little fat on them. That takes them through the problem times. Little Dude got in an outside fight a few months ago. Summary is that he was at the vet for 10 or 12 days and wouldn't eat until the last 2 days. So he lost a lot of weight. So some extra weight can be good.

I like a little extra on my cats for the same reason. Start with a little more and when they don't eat it helps get them through. I like my fd boy at 13.5lbs. Vet wants him at 12.5 & I don't like it. We go round and round. That cushion has helped him many times. Now, I just need to get it built back up.

Love that you let LD have some crunch.

Do you mix the diced chicked in the FF? I've been trying to think up ways to change up the FF. I might add some meat to it and see if that is a hit.
 
For the diced chicken, I tried mixing with FF, even the chicken FF. But even Leo doesn't seem to like that approach. Since they eat 5-8 times a day, the diced chicken becomes one of their mini meals. I squish it up with water.

Mixing real meat with FF is certainly something to try. I don't know why some cats are so picky. Chinus is our Siamese. She will only eat certain FF varieties. The rest, she tries to "bury" with her paws when I bring it to her. Goofy cat.
 
I feed my kids Fancy Feast pate as well and they enjoy it. I've actually started putting a splash of water in with it and mixing it and it kind of makes a slurry. They've loved it and they lap it up (sometimes drinking up the liquid and leaving some pate for the next time). I only feed them 1/4 to 1/2 of a can at a time because my civvie is such a piggy. She'll eat it all in minutes and then throw it up. I also feed them Purely Fancy Feast (Naturals). They're 2 oz. little containers with real shredded meat in a broth (just water, not a gravy like the grilled Fancy Feast cans). I like to supplement with those even though they're spendy because they had really high protein values, low fat, and zero carbs. I divide those between the two for a meal, and if my Lou leaves any leftover, I just mix it in next time with some Fancy Feast pate. I like to change it up for them (I feed them different pate/Naturals flavors each meal), and they seem to appreciate that. I buy the Naturals online on Amazon and the flavors I buy depend on the deals going on (they average to be about $1.37) a tin. I'm thankful my kids aren't very picky! :joyful:
