Thoughts about remission

Sparky's numbers have been pretty normal.... except for a few days here and there where I'd opt to give a tiny bit of insulin.

I know that remission is considered when the BG is "normal" for 2 weeks. But, what if your kitty runs a bit high but also normal without insulin? I have no problem checking BG twice a day.... but, when can we call "remission"?

I really need to get him back to the vet for a check-up.... I think the vet will be happy with his progress.

Just my rambling thoughts for the week. :)

Impressive numbers even if not quite all in the normal range! Are you still withholding food for 2 hours before testing AM and PM? If not, try doing so to see if those numbers come down bit. Sparky may be closer to remission than those numbers would suggest.

It's difficult with Vetsulin to give insulin with low numbers unless you are around to monitor Sparky closely. I don't know what syringes you are using right now, but the only thing I can think of would be to get U100 syringes so that you could draw up even less than 0.25u of Vetsulin for dosing at the higher numbers he is still getting.

Most vets don't aim to have kitty in low normal range when on insulin and Sparky is well below renal threshold and not that far out of normal range much of the time so your vet may be quite satisfied. It's really up to you right now but a little tiny bit more insulin support for his pancreas might get Sparky over that last little hump if in fact those higher readings are fasting readings.

Actually, when a cat is close to remission, we often suggest feeding a mini-meal/snack at + 9 or +10. If the pancreas is working, food will stimulate the pancreas... bringing those AM and PM numbers down.
Sparky is so close. It's worth a try. :)

We try hard to have no food 2 hours prior to testing. Some of the no-test AM and PM are due to YAZ being left down for grazing between tests. We currently use the 3/10 syringes. Still hard to get less than 1/2 unit but, it works when we need it.

Unfortunately, he's had FLUTD for many years.... and tonight I found he peed next to his kitty bed.... after fabulous numbers today.... it's a good thing he's really cute.... otherwise, he'd be living in the shed out back! LOL

If you suspect Sparky might be showing signs of a flare then perhaps a trip to the vet to check it out might be in order. Any stress, inflammation or infection often causes elevated BG.
