? Chase Update and Question

Hi Everyone,

I'm very happy to report that Chase has urinated AND seems to be pretty much down from that pain medication high he was on. Here's my question...

He hasn't eaten much in over a day and now he's STARVING, but his insulin dose doesn't come until 7:00 (6:30 if I push it). What do I do? Also, his BG is 102. I'm really not sure how to handle this. He got his insulin this morning but then I had to feed him with a syringe because he wouldn't eat. Now all I've been able to give him is his freeze dried chicken treats, and he is gobbling them like there's no tomorrow.

So.... what do I do?

Also, when is the best time to give him his oral meds (antibiotic and anti-nausea)? Now, closer to an actual mean, or after his meal?
 
In my opinion you should let Chase eat. He hasn't eaten much and it's more important for him to eat than to worry about how it will effect his BG. That way you'll know if he is eating come shot time. I don't know what time it is where you are, so I'm not sure how many hours you have until shot time. It's better to list time in +1, +2, etc. instead of actual time since everyone is in different time zones.

It's so great to hear he has urinated and come down from the high. Sending prayers.

Hey Carla. I agree... but I wasn't sure about how to treat ALL things, together, everything considered. I added some water to some treats and he's gobbling them up. I think I will give him his shot 30 minutes early tonight and that will also allow me to give earlier tomorrow morning so that I can spend more time with him AFTER insulin and before going to work. :)

Hi Barbara. Yes.. that's why I was wondering if I should wait. But I'm going to play it by ear, just for the time being. He's had a good bit of the treats, which has eased his hunger but shouldn't affect his BG. However, his BG is very low. I will see if I can wait 30 more minutes.

PS... he's still a little wigged out from the pain meds... but nothing like earlier.
 
From Chase's SS it looks like you've shot 102 and below many times before. I don't feel confident giving dosing advice, but he were my cat and I knew he had a good appetite, i would test him again right before feeding, see if he eats well and give him insulin. Probably...
Did you reduce since down from the .1u after he went down to 41 the other night? Just curious how you guys who have former OTJ kitties handle reductions.

That's what I was going to do... test just before insulin time AND even get him to eat a tad before his insulin. I have not reduced since the other night, other than not giving him any at all yesterday morning, but he had been vomiting all morning, so I skipped.

Normally we consider a cat that has come back from the falls to be a long time diabetic. Since Chase was diagnosed less than a year ago, it'd say it's Sandi's call whether or not to take the reduction. 41 is pretty darned close to the below 40 cutoffs for long term diabetics, so....

I'm glad he's eating and feeling better. :woot: Have you shot yet? If you have, I'd monitor closely tonight, given the shot it early.

Sandi, just for housekeeping purposes, next time you need to post an update and you already have a condo for that day, please just edit your subject line and put the update in that condo. As you know, there are a lot of people posting condos these days and it gets confusing if one person had two different ones going. Thanks. :)

You can change the subject line to reflect something new. That will help to let people know that you have a question, etc. in your established condo for the day.

 
I agree with Carla, let him eat. The no feeding within 2 hours of testing is for newbies that don't have a lot of data on board to know how their kitty is going to react to insulin. You have plenty of data.

Yes, keep everything in one condo and change the title to a ? mark if you have a concern. It's just easier to have everything in one thread a day.
 
This sounds SO much better Sandy! Just a little caution - freeze dried treats rehydrate using the body's water. Too many can cause constipation as there's not enough water left in the colon to move them thru easily.

Just imagine if everyone posted a new condo every time they had a question! :eek: It's not that you aren't "allowed" to do another condo - it just makes it easier for others to see everything that's going on in one. If you have a totally unrelated question - I mean like about another cat, or if you want to start a discussion that isn't related to your cat (like when someone posts about a food recall, etc.), then you can do another condo. Does that make sense?

It does. I'm sorry, and I will change the subject line as things progress. I thought that since he was so sick I could post differently. I won't do that again. :)

Hi Judy. I've always given him his shot AS he's eating his first meal. Since day 1, that's what I've done. Yesterday morning he was poking around in his food dish and I gave him his shot. Then he turned his nose up at at. Very UNLIKE Chase. But I think from now on I will feed him just a tad and then shoot. Is that what you do?

Getting Boomer to eat is usually not a problem :rolleyes: but I always test then feed then shoot.
