Hello, what a great site. We were told to purchase Nova mix 30 insulin for Moxie but it doesn't come up on this site at all and I am worried others are not using it for cats, does anyone have experience with this brand ? Moxie is 17 and sadly it's time to start the shots, food alterations weren't enough. Her readings aren't too high 260-306 but she is getting weaker. Moxie lives in Mexico so I will have to go see what is available at the pharmacies here. Any tips on insulin and insulin pens are appreciated.

Welcome Moxie and her human!

Oops, thought this was Main Health thread . Pasting over there!

HI and Welcome to FDMB to you and Moxie.

I am not familiar with an insulin called Nova 30 but there is NovaMix 30 which is the equivalent of what we call Novolin NPH here. Maybe they just shortened the name when they told you. I'd clarify with the vet or a pharmacist.

Hi and Welcome!!

This is a great place, given the circumstances, and is even nicer to hear from some else in Mexico, where in Mexico are you located?

Regarding your question about insulin you should not have any problem getting Lantus pens (also in vials but is more practical to use pens) almost all pharmacies carry it you do not require a prescription. You should also look for the DB syringes with half markings also easily available with 8 and 6 mm needles ( I prefer 6mm)

Gracias ! I went and got the Lantus and an injection pen for Moxie, We are lucky to live quite close to Playa Del Carmen in Mexico so there are plenty of pharmacies. Due to the heat here I will have to keep in fridge even though not recommended. Do others bring it to room temp prior to injecting ? I will switch over to the main thread area now for other questions, and concerns.

There's no problem in keeping it in the fridge, it will last longer than the 28 days, but you have to leave it all the time in there.

If you want to have it at room temperature is OK too but then you will have to consider that the manufacturer states that it only lasts 28 days and since the doses we usually give are very small compared to humans you may end up throwing away a lot of insulin every month

You will want to purchase syringes to draw the Lantus out of the pen for injecting. The pen itself only allows for 0.5u adjustments and with our little furkids, we recommend making dose adjustments of 0.25u at a time so the best dose is not skipped over. Also, the manufacturer indicates not refrigerating the pen once in use because there are concerns that the pen's dosing mechanism might not be as accurate....another reason to use syringes instead. :)

I think all of us keep it in the fridge. :). A good friend of mine was just in Playa del Carmen for vacation two weeks ago. I went there once when I was a kid. Many moons ago. Lol. Welcome
