Buddy's AMPS is high because he would not eat yesterday and all I could get him to eat was HC food. Buddy has not been feeling well for a couple of weeks. Today, is the 3rd time we have seen his vet in 2 weeks

A Spec fpl test was run, which is a test for pancreatitis, it had to be sent out to an outside lab. He put Buddy on B12 injections, twice a week. He said the frequent bowel movements could be caused by his digestive system not being able to break down what he eats. He gave Buddy an injection for pain, but he did not send any home with us. This doctor seems to have a problem giving pain medication, if Buddy can not get pain medicine when he needs it, we will need to find another doctor.

Poor Buddy, I hope he feels better soon. Do you give him any probiotics? That'll sometimes help tummy issues. Human grade probiotics work fine. How is his appy today? Ugh on the vet not giving pain meds. Getting onto regular buprenorphine was a QOL game changer for Neko - she had really bad arthritis and the bupe made a world of difference.

Here is the link to yesterday's post, so people can track the history: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...tus-amps-246-4-250-not-wanting-to-eat.181837/

Nice to see him come down at PMPS as the depot fills. :)

Teresa, I think I read someone actually ordered Bupe on their own but I don't know if it was the regular Buprenex liquid like you usually have for Buddy. My clinic was a bit stingy when I asked for a refill for Maury with his flare too. I think it's because it's an opioid, so like people they don't want to give refills. But the Vet should've given you something to help Buddy at home. I know you're just learning about Lantus but have you ever tried Slippery Elm Bark for Buddy? I think it did help Maury some :):bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you, so much. Your kitty looks so sweet.

I have never tried slippery elm bark, someone mentioned this to me the other day. Yesterday, the vet put him on B12 injections. I think he is feeling a little better. I am going back to the vet he used to go to, she is not as easy to get ahold of but if they don't help Buddy, I don't need them. Even human doctors don't want to give pain meds, because the DEA makes it so hard for them.

How is your job going, I have missed reading your post on the forums.

Buprenorphine for pain comes in liquid and is squirted in the side of the check. Would you be able to do that?
Yes, I have used Buprenorphine in the past. It must be hard to get now. I know you can use Tramadol for cats, but it has a lot of side affects.

I have been feeding Buddy HC dry food to get him to eat, then his numbers are too high. One of my other cats who is FIV + takes Probiotics that are human grade, could try those on Buddy. Buddy is taking a probiotic that has a paste with it, in the box there is 10 pills, it is supposed to help his stools. That is not a long term probiotic. Yesterday the vet put Buddy on B12 injection, 2x a week. I don't know if this helped, but he was more willing to eat this morning. I am going back to Buddy's old vet, she would give him pain medicine before 12/20/16.

How do you find these different post numbers.

Yong, How much of the Slippery Elm Bark did you give Maury and how often. Are you still giving it to him. Let me know if you remember anything about ordering Buprenex

First go back to the previous day's post. Since I get email notification if anyone comments on my post, it's easy to do. The go to the browser window, and copy the URL address on top. Next start a new post for the day. In the text window, select the Link icon - it looks like a chain link. A pop up window shows up with a spot to enter an address. Paste the URL address you copied previous. That gives you the format I did for you today. Some people have words with hot links like "Buddy's yesterday". To do that, first type the words, select them, then select the Link icon and enter the URL address. The words "Buddy's yesterday" will turn blue and be linked to that address.

Sounds very complicated to me. I have not had time to start a new thread today, but yesterday at the vet, he gave Buddy an injection of B12 and he is eating better today. Hoping, it helped because I am to give him 2 injections of B12 a week.

It's not that complicated. Step 1 - click on the URL address for the old post. Step 2 - start a new post. Step 3 - select the Link icon and past the URL address. Done.

If their B12 is low, kitties will feel better with supplementation.

Thank you, maybe that is part of Buddy's problem that he has been having lately.

I gave around 1/8 teaspoon once a day mixed into his meal. I think I gave it for 8-9 days. I was told it's a temporary thing so like 2 weeks max? @Squalliesmom Lucy was my informant ;). Important thing to remember is not to give any meds 2 hours after he gets SEB. I haven't given it again. He is on Pancreas Booster now. *I think it's helping* lol.

For the Bupe orders online.... Angela, did you mention this? @Phoebes :bookworm:. Maybe it was @Lisa and Smoky . Apologies if it wasn't either of you ladies! My memory is not helping much and neither is my searching skills lol.

Teresa, I did find some prices for Buprenex vial at local pharmacies: CVS, Target, etc on GoodRx. You could always ask them if you need a script :)

Yes, that's what I gave my girl, too, 1/8 tsp twice a day mixed in with her food, with 1 tbsp warm water added. It was a huge help for her! The reason you don't give any other meds within a two-hour period is because the SEB coats the stomach walls and can interfere with the absorption of other meds. This is also why I would not recommend it for long-term use, in case it blocked any nutrient absorption, but it's fine for a few weeks at a time if you need to use it that long!

I have not had time to star.t a new post, all I have got done is taking Buddy or my Mother to the doctor, I took Buddy to his current vet on Tuesday, I was very upset yesterday when I found out the test he ran on Buddy was not a good test for showing pancreatitis. He gave Buddy a shot for pain, only after I asked several times. He did put Buddy on B12 injections.

Today, I took Buddy to the vet he used to go to, she gave Buddy a shot for pain and nausea before we left.
She also sent pain meds home with Buddy, she ran the test they say is the gold standard for pancreatitis

I hope you and Maury do not have any more episodes of pancreatitis and I wish Buddy and I did not either.

I had the bupe for Smoky compounded at my local pharmacy. My vet would call it in for me. I had three 1 ml syringes each time and one syringe had 5 doses of bupe in it. I don't know if this helps or not.

The vet, I had been using would not give him pain meds to take home.. He really did not want to give him a shot in the office, but I just kept on asking, until he gave Buddy a shot. That was on Monday, on Wednesday I took Buddy to the vet he used to see. She gave him a shot in the office and sent Bupe home for Buddy.

Glad you were able to get the needed meds for Buddy.

I didn't give Smoky bupe in a shot but orally when he needed it. Is that what you do with Buddy? Its considered a controlled substance in my state so the only way to get it is if its given orally.

I did not myself give Buddy a shot of Bupe, the vet did. When ever I have been sold Bupe from the vet, to use for Buddy at home, it has been in a syringe with no needle, to be given orally.

My vet called it in to Diamondback pharmacy and I got a 30cc bottle of the liquid you squirt in the cheek. It is a controlled substance in the US.

ETA my vet was good at making sure I had an at home month supply of all the meds Smokey needed or might need.

That's interesting. I know in PA they won't dispense bupe in a bottle, its only given out in prefilled syringes. It was a liquid I gave to him in the cheek of his mouth. It might just be the part of the state I live in.

I'm in PA also. Diamondback is in AZ so I don't know if that's the reason. It was in October, so maybe the law changed some. Vet called in the concentration and dose with refills. Diamondback would send it to me. I think I got 3 deliveries over 7 months.

Call Diamondback and ask them. If they can do it, you have to convince your vet. The ER vet who originally started Smokey on it for p'titis would only give me 48 hrs worth at a time. I had to drive 1/2 hr to keep picking it up. That's when my vet said we could order it since Smokey would be on it long term.

I don't need the bupe anymore since Smoky crossed the rainbow bridge at the end of May. I have a friend whose cat needs bupe on occasion for pancreatitis.
Thanks for the info as I'm sure it will help her out in caring for her cat.

Lisa so sorry. My Smokey crossed in October. Because of the p'titis and his heart as well as age, my vet in phone conference with the ER dr decided he should remain on it for life, not knowing at the time how short that would be.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your Smokey too. I had just bought a supply of bupe for my Smoky but he passed away suddenly a week later. I don't think he had an easy crossing at all. I wanted to have him go peacefully to sleep at the vet but he didn't make it until his appt the next morning.

I know the feeling. I just received a new bottle of the bupre. Didn't get to open it. Being controlled I gave it to my vet to give to a rescue he works with. My Smokey turned in 24 hrs. He had a stroke. Sometimes you don't know when 1 day can be the difference.

I gave the bupe to my vet to donate to someone in need. My Smoky seemed ok in the morning when I went to work. About an hour after I came home his back legs gave out and he couldn't walk or stand.
I never thought that maybe he might have had a stroke. He went downhill pretty quickly and died in my arms early the next morning. I will never know for sure
