Felix' s BG 45 @ +3.5, no symptoms.. after 0.75u at 7 pm, just gave him some HC soft food. How often should I recheck it now?

I'd recheck in 15 minutes and see what the HC food did, if anything.

Try not to panic. Try not to let him run around too much if he seems playful from the carbs. He needs to conserve what glucose he has.

If after 15 mins he is still at 45 or is going up, test again in another 15 mins.

If he's going down, you may need to either keep feeding him small amounts of HC food every 30 minutes for several hours until after his nadir or seek help from a vet for IV glucose therapy. He probably hasn't hit his lowest point at +3.5 hours yet.

Do you have any honey or glucose syrup?

Replied on your other thread.....it's best to just start one thread per day.....if you run into trouble, edit the subject line instead of starting another thread.

With all the cats we have here, it's just easier to keep track of 1 per day per cat

From the other thread:

Check again at +4.....and as long as he's above 50, you can give him a little regular low carb food and test again at +4.5....then if all's good, test once more at +5.5

We generally want you to test for at least 2 hours past the time you have to feed any high carb food to make sure they stay up ......if they drop back down again and you have to feed HC again, that 2 hours starts over

Bg was 51 in 20 min after the first check. Gave him about 1/2 tea spoon of karo, then some of his regular LC food.

Good that it went up. I would keep testing every 20 or so minutes. Just make sure it's staying level or rising. If either of those, that's good and just keep testing. If it drops, small amounts of food and keep testing.

While you are waiting for the next test, it would be a good idea to fill in the notes on your spreadsheet - so you know what you did and have a reminder of what works best for Felix the next time you encounter numbers below 50. Each cat responds differently to HC and to karo.

Edit: The spinning thing on my computer keeps spinning (darn iTunes download) and I cannot monitor closely.

I feel your low BG plight. Right now we're baffled by Dweezil's low numbers during the days on low insulin doses (low for him anyway). He seems perfectly fine but it's still a worry.

It's technically a GOOD thing that they're low on such low insulin doses though, right? The less they need, the better! As long as we can be aware and keep them safe while we all adapt to their little bodies!

Bg was 51 in 20 min after the first check.

It takes at least 20 minutes for the food to get into the bloodstream...if they're really low and you're using Karo/honey/syrup, testing that often may be necessary, but it might take a little longer for food to break down and start to raise the numbers

Bg 100 at +4.5

Yeah!! Did you feed him the 1/2 teaspoon of Karo along with some low carb food at +3.5 or was that after the 51 @ about +4?

Get Chris to tell you about the first time she fed karo

Pfffffttttt

But as long as she brought it up, I'll tell you!! The first time China dropped below 50, I knew I was supposed to give Karo/honey/syrup but I didn't know how much, so I dumped about half a bottle into a bowl and let her have it!!

She loved it!!....Needless to say, it brought her blood glucose up!

Afterwards, I learned it was supposed to be a drop or two, not a cup or two.....LOL

It was after the 51 @ about 4, then rechecked @4.5, it was 100

Heheh!!

In theory, if a cat is going REALLY dangerously low, would giving a lot of karo (like too much) be better than just a little? Would it save a life or prevent an emergency vet visit?

Lol.. I was trying to give it to him out of a spoon, he did not want to.. he was licking it off my finger..

There *could* be a problem from giving too much karo... it depends on the cat. Some cats might vomit. When BG numbers are low, the last thing you want is a vomiting cat. Once they start vomiting, their BG numbers may plummet and you could have an extremely hard time getting them to eat again to pull their BG numbers up. Other cats may experience severe diarrhea from too much karo. The results can be the same. Numbers could plummet and you may have one heck of a time getting them to eat. And some cats like Chris' China might not have any problems at all. ECID.
