Buddy's 2nd day Lantus- AMPS 246/+4=250 not wanting to eat

This is Buddy's 2nd day taking Lantus, I could not get a reading at AMPS +2. Buddy is not wanting to eat, I gave him 1/4 of an Ondansetron pill and 1/2 of an appetite stimulant. I kept sprinkling Forti-Flora on his YA (LC dry food) and he would take a few bites and then go lay down. Then a little later he would come back and take a few bites of YA, but no canned food. I have several different brands of canned food opened, but he will not eat any of the canned food. He has terrible gas and is having 3 or 4 bowel movements a day. To me it looks like his belly is swollen. Yes, I have been checking for Ketone's, on a daily basis. Is it strange that a doctor has never mentioned Ketone's to me.

Tomorrow, I am taking Buddy to the doctor. I went back and looked at the notes on Buddy's SS and most of them mentioned him not wanting to eat. Last week the doc weighed Buddy and he had gained weight, I don't know how that could happen. Buddy is chubby, his belly looks swollen to me. Has anyone else's kitty had pancreatitis, or anything else with these symptoms, if so would you pls let me know.
 
Gizmo has had similar, but his problem was constipation.

What is the consistency of Buddy's BM's? Do you have any SEB? Does he seem nauseated?

What is SEB, I think he is nauseated, because he will go over to his food and smell around, but he will not eat.

I cannot say his stool is loose at this time, but it is soft enough that it gets on his hair around his anus and different places in that area. He has really smelly gas and bowel movements. He is having 3 or 4 bowel movements a day, that seems like a lot.

Have you recently changed his food? That might cause the gas and smelly poo.

Are you spacing the ondansetron, waiitng 30 minutes, then giving the cypro.

Would you be able to try a different food?

these two, usually available everywhere, aren't much more expensive than friskies
and I think they even have a canned version of it. Notice that it's in natural juices , beware that they have a gravy version that you don't want.

this food is supposed to be wheat free.


Ask the vet about ibd?
And I'd be inclined to want an ultra sound if this doesn't improve soon. That will tell you if the intestinal walls are thickened.

With in the last month I changed him from one type of YA to another type of YA. Buddy was eating Royal Canin Glycobalance and with this round of problems he wanted something else. He will eat something 1 day and then will not eat it again. I do think I remember someone saying YA caused them some problems. When he gets like this he wants dry food.

I did not know that you were space the ondansetron and the cypro. I have not been spacing the 2, what kind of problem does this cause.

Buddy had been eating Royal Canin Glycobalance wet food, with this round of problems he would not eat it anymore. I have Friskies & FF at all times, it just happened that I had friskies opened and he ate some, he has not ate any wet food today. Buddy will eat something 1 day and not the next.

I will try that this evening, I gave him meds at 5:00 a.m., but did not try to feed him for 2 hrs and he still would not eat.
 
it takes roughly 30 minutes for a pill to dissolve and start working....

you can offer food after the appy stimulant but it may take the pill kicking in for him to want it....

it's the bloating I'm worried about....

I would wait and give the meds a chance. I try and not get more than one thing going at a time.

I am wondering if the gas is making him feel like he needs to go and that is why he is in the LB often. Does he poo every time?

It is not that he is in the LB a lot, it is that he has a bowel movement.

To me his stomach looks swollen, I have bloating myself and it is uncomfortable, but when it's gone I am alright. He is going to the vet tomorrow.
 
If he's been eating less and gaining weight I'd be worried about fluid retention. I think a vet trip is a good idea and possibly X-rays. An ultrasound is best done by a boarded radiologist and also a good idea if he doesn't perk up.

I agree with all of these ideas, there is no board certified radiologist in the town where I live.
I had been giving Buddy an a/s to get him to eat, so he might have been eating too much. This week-end he did not want to eat even with an a/s, I had to give him HC & MC foods to get him to eat, so now his BG is high.
 
Hi Teresa! I saw your quesiton over on Kris' thread. Yes, I'm still here. We just spent a week out in the woods with very little internet connection, so I've been a little quiet. Sam is doing well now that his dental and extractions are out of the way.

I hope everything goes well at the vet today and he's able to help figure out what's up with Buddy!
