His numbers through the night were more leveled out. I got his ketone test just a few minutes ago and it showed at the small level. Have given him the water from a can of tuna and will do that again in another hour or so and continue doing that until the next time I can catch him in the litter box to see if we are helping it or not. Looks like tunafish sandwiches for lunch today again.

Any sign of infection? taking longer in litter box?
Teeth?

glad you are on top of the ketone test....
You could also add a little water to that tuna juice.

No signs of any infections. He is behaving just like he always does and is currently kicking back and resting on his favorite recliner right now. I always try to test when he is getting higher numbers just so I can stay on top of it. Don't want ketones to get too bad since it can get so much worse if left unmonitored.

Thanks for reminding me on adding water to the tuna water, would make it go further. He sucks it down like he hasn't drank in weeks lol. He is a monster when it come to anything tuna!

at least that is to your advantage....
you could also put a little tuna with water in a food processor or blender to make more tuna water. You could even make ice cubes and let them melt in a bowl so he has lots of it.

Oh he is a mess, added water and obviously too much water cause he only drank a small amount and is now staring at me wondering where the rest is lol. It is obvious that he is spoiled.

Hi there

Any history of ketones?

Anything over 'trace' warrants serious attention. I recommend stepping up ketone testing to twice a day.

Ketones can quickly develop to life threatening levels. My BK once went from 'negative' to 'large' in 24 hours.

He has had ketones show before but by the end of the day was back to normal with us increasing fluids etc. And as I have mentioned already, will be doing several tests today.

Remember to check the expiration date on your ketone strips. They can be persnickety if old or if you haven't stored them exactly as they describe.

The strips don't expire til November (6 months after I first opened them) and I keep them closed up in a cabinet so all good there. He decided he had enough tuna water so doing kitty stew now to keep encouraging him to get fluids.

He isnt hiding at all, so he is definitely feeling his normal self. I'm gonna have to have hubby do little box patrol though so I can jump in the shower lol.

His +4 is 174 and +6 is 198. Looks like he is trying to stay more level today.

Missed his last trip to the litter box for another test so still waiting to get another ketone test. He knew I was waiting for that and was watching me. The moment I got into the shower he went to the litter box and of course the two amateurs (daughter and hubby) weren't able to catch some urine lol.

With him just starting on the Lantus, should I shoot the 194? Or wait? I don't know what would be better on this. I don't want to drop him too low, but with his ketones (still working on second test), don't want him getting too high again either.

On this forum, we use 150 as the number below which you stop, do not feed, and post for help before shooting.

Even though you are new to Lantus, you are not a new caregiver. I would shoot the full dose, if you have not already. Get a +2 test to start.

I think you put it in the wrong spot.... ( it's not tomorrow yet)

I got that fixed.

Wasn't exactly sure how that worked with him just getting settled in with Lantus. Next time I will shoot full dose.

Finally got his ketone test. He was bound and determined he didn't want me putting the scoop under his booty. There is a slight hint of color to the strip but definitely more negative then trace. I will be testing him every morning for a bit though and add extra fluids to his food to help keep him this way.
