Sorry, haven't had my coffee yet. Post DKA Millie has been doing well since her last hospitalization with DKA. She's had a few dose decreases and more greens (yay!). My concern is her BGs are going low at times and I've had to monitor and control with food. I am leaving this Thursday and will be away for 6 days. The DH will be here to do basic pre0tests and give insulin. He will not be available to monitor for low numbers (gone for 9 hours); he will not be on the Board either. I will be testing her today and tomorrow and would like input regarding a safe dose for her while I'm away. Feedback is appreciated.

to answer the previous question, yes that .5 u drop is a caretaker dose.
with the dka previous issue, it is important not to drop too low because as you know....
ketones from not enough insulin + infection + not enough calories

so I want him to be able to balance that.
I would also say for your piece of mind, that he needs to float extra food ( add water so it stays fresher longer) for while he is absent.
And I think I would make that a medium carb food instead of low carb. That way Millie can boost herself during those long absences.

Will he have to work on the weekend too?

Yes, I thought it was probably the caretaker dose, just like to be sure and not assume. So as of Thursday morning she will be on 1u 'til I get back & do a curve. I am picking up MC food today (we ran out) and the Cat-Man_Do which encourages her to eat. I will leave him well prepared. He will be off over the weekend which is good.

And a big Yes! to peace of mind. Millie's been through enough. Thanks you!!!

You have a difficult situation.... all you can do is balance what you can.
Too bad you don't have a neighbor who could pop in and at least check the food, add more if it's all gone.

Yes, a bit tough. We do have someone coming in to walk the dog in the afternoon, the DH can leave a bowl in the frig and ask them to give it to Millie at mid-day. Thanks for mentioning that! This is why it's so important to have other feedback!!

Or they could open a can, that way it's not cold.
other possibility is to give it 8 seconds in the microwave to knock off the chill.

I always leave bowls, cans, a fork and written instructions like add 2 Tablespoons of water and stir with a fork to remind my caretaker.
I will leave it all set up myself so DH doesn't forget in his morning rush.

Millie seems to be coasting the last few days, I guess that's a good thing. I would like to know how she is doing with this dose.

I'm a bit confused by Millie's numbers the last several days. Can a bounce cause 'flat' readings? Just trying to understand her. She went from crazy highs to lows and now this. I know we recently reduced her dose and that might be what's doing it but not sure.

I'm going away the day after tomorrow and will be having the DH give her a caretaker dose of 1u instead of the 1.5 that was taking her low.
