hi!
My name is elena and my 15 years old obese indoor cat was diagnosed diabetic one month ago.
We are still trying to set the right insulin dose. I thought I was doing well from 256 to 154 and today I got a glycemic of 43, without symptoms.... I immediately fed him and he's now peacefully sleeping.
Honestly I am quite scared
Thanks for being here

Great that you are testing and caught that. Are you using a human or pet meter?

If you set up a signature it will be helpful. Click on your name in the upper right corner and choose signature. Add info such as your pets name, type of insulin, dose, food you're feeding, date diagnosed, age of your pet, and any other health concerns.

What is your current dose? Obviously going forward you need to reduce.

Please test him again every 15-20 until he's in a safe range.

I see you posted 15 min ago... Can you test again? Let me know what you got. How long ago was his last shot? How much? Which insulin?

Hi Elena,
Janet has asked you for some important information that we need in order to help you.
  • What insulin are you using?
  • What dose are you giving?
  • What dose did you start at and how fast was it raised to where it is now?

Please test him again every 15-20 until he's in a safe range.

Sorry, I was waiting for my vets reply while reading the site and haven't seen you reply
Shot was 4 hours before test, at 9:20 CET. He is in 2 units prozinc since 2 weeks. We started with 1.5
He eats only hills md drift and canned combined
I will re test now and come back
Thanks!

I got 54 now
Still too low is it?

If you are testing with a human meter that's barely over the "safe" margin for BG. If you're using a pet meter that's far too low. I should have asked you what meter you're using. Please reply about that ASAP. The advice for what to do wiull depend on that.

While I'm waiting to know what meter you have, I'll give you our recommendations for feeding , testing, dosing:
  1. A starting dose of ProZinc is 1 unit twice a day.
  2. If it needs to be increased, go up by only 0.25 u (eyeball this on your syringe).
  3. Feed only low carb canned food, no dry at all. There are grocery store brands that are fine and much less expensive like Friskies and Fancy Feast pates (no gravy types because they're too high in carbs).
  4. Start a structured blood glucose testing routine: every AM and PM before feeding and giving insulin (no food at least 2 hours before this); at least once during the day between shots; at least once before bed; extra tests on days off.
  5. Set up the spreadsheet we use here to log all BG data. It's viewable by all members and it's the first thing we look at before offering advice.

Good! Give your kitty a little (1-2 tsp) of his regular food now and retest in 20-30 minutes. Post the number here. Please tell me ASAP how many hours since the insulin was given.

Insulin was given 6 hours ago
He already had his favourite food (dry hills md) immediately when I saw such low number
What should I consider as normal? 120?

OK. So he was at 54 around the expected nadir (low BG point). The dry food usually takes a bity longer to act but can boost BG longer as well. Test in 20-30 minutes anyway to see where he is. Post here.

I'm here for about 30 more minutes, Kris, then I have to leave too .
Neron's Mum, it's been about an hour since last test, have you retested? I think we're nearing +7 from his shot this morning, if I read things correctly.

Yes indeed it is now 7 Hours from the shot this morning
Don't worry, he looks ok, trying to catch a fly....
I will retest now.

Thank you all!
In got the vet and she says everything is OK
New dose 1.25, next test in one week
Keeping an eye on him anyway
Again million thanks for the support!!!
And enjoy your Sunday

I will see if it works.... Fingers crossed!
(Our cats are amanzingly similar, I thought it was Nerón in your avatar!)
