Question about type of insulin

Okay, this may not be the best place to post this but I figured I'd get more eyes on it here than on the Off Topic board.

My question is about insulin but not for felines. We have an elderly family friend who has been very ill and has fallen on some hard times. He is diabetic and can no longer afford his insulin. We would like to help him but I don't know what insulin he is talking about - he says he uses Humalog 5, in conjunction with Lantus - and nowhere can I find anything about Humalog 5.

Has anybody else heard of or know of Humalog 5? I am afraid he is confused....
 
Could he mean U50??

"Diluted HUMALOG U-100 for Subcutaneous Injection — HUMALOG may be diluted with Sterile Diluent for HUMALOG for subcutaneous injection. Diluting one part HUMALOG to nine parts diluent will yield a concentration onetenth that of HUMALOG (equivalent to U-10). Diluting one part HUMALOG to one part diluent will yield a concentration one-half that of HUMALOG (equivalent to U-50)."

or humulog 50/50

Could someone take a look at his insulin containers to verify what he's using? If he lives in a different location, does he have a friend or neighbour who could check?

I found the same information, but he keeps saying humalog 5 - he seems to be under the impression that it is a rarely used insulin...

I just don't want to give him $$ to help pay for something that doesn't exist or that someone is ripping him off for! He can get a little confused sometimes, or has a hard time communicating things, so I want to make sure he's not getting taken.
 
See if your relative is willing to let you get their prescription information from their doctor or pharmacy. They'll have to call either place to have you entered as someone permitted to ask such questions because of HiPPA (sp?) laws.

Thanks, Shelagh, I'll check out those links! Unfortunately, he's not a relative, just a family friend, so I don't think I can get access to his medical/prescription information, and he lives a couple of hours away from me.
 
I believe as long as he gives permission, he can designate anyone to be given the information.

Your own doctor's office could probably tell you the law for sure.
 
If you are concerned you could send hhs (or your areas version of it) to do a well person check.

You can send the sheriff for a wellness check if you feel there is a safety need and often this can lead to starting hhs services.
