Angel has had diarrhea since last night and hasn't eaten. So unlike her to not want her breakfast. Ketones came back negative and BG isn't an unusual number. :( worried. Only thing different given has been YAZ treats that they gave me a sample of.Haven't started the kibble yet.

None of my cats liked the treats. The food gave cc the runs for a few days until she got used to it. Introduce it slowly.

Thank you.
Try meat and broth baby food (no seasonings). A shot of Cerenia can get them on the right track too. Teasel got an upset tummy from gravy food I gave him to steer low BG and that's what the vet gave him. I now use honey in his regular LC food if I need to bump him up.

She is so lethargic also. My boyfriend says she hasn't moved all day. This is so unlike her

If she has pancreatitis, for example, she'll feel quite ill. The vet can do a quick yes/no test for it in the clinic or send away a blood sample for a more comprehensive ($$$) test. Either way, the treatment is the same: fluids, pain meds, antinausea meds (Cerenia) and maybe an appetite stimulant (mirtazapine or cyproheptadine). I wouldn't leave it too long if she doesn't turn around this evening because no food, inflammation and no insulin (if she won't eat) is a recipe for ketones.

Taking her to the animal ER right now

Did you get the SNAP fPL test done? Maury perked up for maybe 24 hours after they gave him some fluids once diagnosed with pancreatitis. Not trying to create more anxiety but just keep an eye on her like Kris said :). Sounds very much like Maury's first signs. :bighug:

We made an apt for regular vet for Monday if she's not all the way better. We had no tests done. It was animal ER and they charge like crazy. They wanted $200 for blood work and said they mignt not even be able to tell if she has it or not

Well if it is pancratitis the fluids will help. As long as she's eating I wouldn't worry about it.

I still think it was an upset tummy.

I do too. But I'm paranoid and am an extremely anxious person so I think the worst. The vet didn't seem too concerned. All symptoms were coming from bf as I was at work all day. When I saw her she looked fine. Fine at vet. No abdominal pain. 1 degree over normal temperature. As soon as we got home she was her normal self. Wanting dinner etc. I dunno. Her nueropathy actually seems to be bothering her tho.

She got down to 76 last night. Gave more canned food and she ate it all. I think I will give 2u this morning instead of 2.0F. When I woke up she was on the bed with me which is a good sign. The night before I literally had to get her from behind the chair even after I opened her food can. She didnt want any part in it

76 is a perfect number for nadir! Good job Angel!

So full.

Do you guys know any kitties who have actually done well on that prescription W/D food for diabetic cats? That vet at ER last nignt was a complete jerk to me for not feeding her that. He said its the best thing I can do for her. *eye roll*

I'm so sorry you had to take Angel to the ER but delighted to hear she is doing better today.

The short answer to your question re: the W/D food is No! I think W/D is the weight control diet which is high in fibre content to fill kitty up faster but the carb level is through the roof.... about 32% for the canned. So while some vets will recommend it, that advice is based on very old school thinking when high fibre diets were recommended for diabetic cats.

The prescription foods are not really prescription and don't contain anything special to warrant that branding. For a diabetic cat, there is no "prescription" diet that is better for them than what is readily available at your local retailer. Vets are brain washed into thinking those prescription foods are the holy grail by the companies who make them. Believe it or not, most vet training re: nutrition is provided by the big name food companies like Purina, Hills and Royal Canin. Prescription foods, while possibly helpful for some conditions, are for the most part are nothing more than a marketing ploy to make lot of money for the vets and food makers.

Just guessing here but perhaps Angel is getting a bit more used to the lower numbers. Interesting that 76 (beautiful number) last night still resulted in lower pre-shot. Makes me wonder if the 242 this morning was a bit of a bounce and that 2 units set off another bounce leading to that flat mid cycle test today. I'd check Angel tonight by +3 to see what she is up to. Maybe she is looking for another dose decrease.

Will do! I hope so. Would love to get her below 2u. Can't believe when we started this we were at 4u with the vet wanting us to go to 5u.

You are not alone! There seem to be an extraordinary number of vets who think that throwing more insulin at the problem is the solution. Insulin is not a medicine...it's a hormone. I don't think vets get enough training to understand this! ARRRGGHH! I often wonder how many cats don't survive due to overdosing because the protective mechanisms in the body would eventually be overwhelmed and not able to keep the BG at safe levels. You and Angel are doing great and hopefully the GI issues were just a short term problem.

She seem A-ok today :)

When you love something so much & will do anything for them. Let's just hope this is the end to the chaos. In 6 months we've had 1 ER vet visit for each of them, a diabetes diagnosis, 3 vet visits for him with finally a diagnosis of motility disorder and megacolon and close to $3k in vet bills & medication.

I feel ya. I think we've spent about 8k in the past 12 months. You know you spend too much at the vet when they send you a huge box of chocolates in the mail for Christmas. Lol. Meanwhile my driveway has so many cracks in it that a jungle is growing. My five year old was like "we need a new driveway!" I said I know but we spent that money on trying to save Zimmy. He said,"yeah, cats are more important than driveways.". I love this kid.

What do you do for megacolon? My vet said this word as a possibility for one of my civvies last fall but didn't tell me to do anything.

I'm right up there with Janet on expenditures this year for the fur kid. Get puzzled looks when I'm invited for lunch and martinis but have to decline because I just bought kitty's meds, special food, special litter, probiotics and have an upcoming vet visit/test to pay for. The specialty hospital loves to see us coming! I'm waiting for a red carpet laid out to my car for our entrance with valet parking!
