Good morning, Gobbles doing ok this AM. He was standing on the floor next yo bed when I woke up so I put him in bed and got a nice round of kisses. Ate his breakfast well--I started giving him raw chicken last night along with a small amount of pate I have on hand (waiting on Hills RX from vet). Yesterday evening, we sat on the porch together and he did some grooming. He's peeing good, had BM yesterday. I gave him 6.25mg lasik at 5:15 AM. His respiration was 36. I am reading that lasik should be given 6-8 hours apart? He gets it twice a day. I am going to withhold the cyproheptadine today and see if his appy is still good. I will retest respiration in a few hours. I will ask the vet today about prescribing hom Enalapril though I am curious as to why he wasn't prescribed that on Wednesday when the echoC was done. She had rattled off some long name for his disease, but I don't remember it, but will ask today.

Nice on the kisses this morning. I'm glad Gobbles is eating for you this morning. I hope his appy stays good without the cypro. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hey there to you and Goobles. Sorry he got the CHF diagnosis. Wendy and Neko and Doodles and Karen will be a good resource for you as they both have experience with it.

Nice start for him and glad his appy is good for you.

Most give Lasik twice a day unless otherwise warranted. Giving it more frequently then that is harder on their kidneys. Doodles was on Enalpril for the HCM...Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Does that sound like the diagnosis? There are a few different types of cardiomyopathy...HCM, DCM (and RCM. Depending on Gobbles dx is whether they would prescribe an ace inhibitor like Enalapril or not. There are a few different drugs that are used long with Lasix. If you have questions I'd be calling the vet. It's overwhelming especially in the beginning of learning about CHF and heart issues. Glad you got some good snuggles and kisses this morning! Make sure Gobbles is sleeping when you take the RR.

I'm getting his lasix compounded into a fish-flavored liquid form (6.25mg twice a day). Should I give the lasix every 12 hours? I read at a few different sites online that it should be given at 6-8 hour intervals. I spoke to vet's office. Doctor recommends DM with low sodium. He LOVES raw chicken. I have been giving him that with FF pate until I get to the store to buy some low-sodium foods. How about raw rabbit? beef? turkey? fish? The vet told me NOT to restrict his liquids, and that the reason she did not start the ACE Inhibitor is because she wants to make sure first that his kidneys can handle the Lasix; he has a follow-up appointment in 2 weeks.

I would follow what ever your vet is recommending about his dosing schedule. Some cats do get Lasik more frequently but Doodles cardiologist kept him on 12/12 and increased his dose instead. Giving it more frequently then that is harder on their kidneys. Doodles was Mr. Finicky picky pants of an eater so I was not able to change his diet. If Gobbles will eat low sodium it will benefit him.

Absolutely agree....diuretics make them thirsty and they needs the water to help flush the kidneys.

Goad to see a RR of 32!

I'm sorry about the diagnosis, Kat, but it sounds like you caught things pretty quickly. Trix had CHF at the end, but she had also been battling advanced kidney disease for 3 years and it is "challenging" balancing the two.

I 100% agree with Karen about the lasix dosing....this is definitely NOT a medication that you want to "go rogue" with. Follow your vet's advice with this CHF stuff, and if for some reason you aren't comfortable with what this vet suggests, find another. But definitely don't self-medicate anything when dealing with CHF.

Great news the RR is coming down. It took a couple of days on meds before Neko got back into normal range after seeing the cardio vet. She was also on benazapril, originally for her proteinuria, but it's also an ACE inhibitor. She also got Vetmedin (pimomedin) for her heart. It helped the heart work better, but it's not appropriate for all types of heart issues. Her Lasix was once every two days, but we were playing the balancing game with kidneys.

You will likely have to get fairly frequent bloodwork done at first, until the vet gets a good picture of how the kidneys are doing.

Neko was eating a raw diet, and her cardio and IM vet were OK with that. Until Neko decided she was tired of it. For a while she was Ok with cooked raw. Then I had to do the canned food hunt.

6.25 gr every 12 hours (12.5 total daily). I have the pill form at present, and it is being compounded into liquid with a fishy taste. His cardio vet is a young, Ohio State Graduate:
"Dr. XXXXXXXXXX
After graduating from The Ohio State University in 2004, she completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery internship followed by a Cardiology Internship. Her special interests include Cardiology, Ultrasonography, and Soft Tissue Surgery. "

Hi Wendy, I hope the RR stays low...if it does, then I know the Lasik dosing must be appropriate. Just came home from a informative hunt...found a few of the low-sodium foods from list I gathered from the internet; many of the others can be ordered online....will be placing another Chewy order....and better that the fed ex guy carries the 40 pounds of litter to your door...

Hi Kat, I'm just seeing this. Sounds like you have gotten lots of good advice. I don't have any experience with Gobbles' issues, but we are sending along some beautiful healing vines for him.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty
