Hi there,

My name is Kerstin and I am losing my mind trying to take blood from Sam's ear.
Sam was diagnosed on 7/15/17.
He's an 8 year old half- abyssinian, we immediately discontinued all dry food, so all my 7 cats are on low- carb now.
Sam is ultra- high strung, so getting his glucose tested is a nightmare, my vet didn't even mention it but I tend to be pro- active. He's on 1 unit of vetsulin right now, his blood glucose was in the 300's at the vet, 3+ in urine.

May be best to post this on the main forums to get more people to see it and offer suggestions.
I can give you hope though. I saw many many videos on YouTube of all these perfect kitty's allowing (happily) their caretakers draw blood from their ear and get the bg reading. It was informative BUT it made me feel,like such a failure when my kitty didn't do the same.
I felt I was losing the battle but I didn't and now my kitty will come to get tested for bribes. ;)
It takes patience and perseverance and yummy treats but you can do it and your kitty can be trained. :cat:
 
I hear ya Kerstin! I am wrapping my newly diagnosed Casey loosely in a towel cos it the only way I can hold him to poke his ears. So far its working and he isnt mad at me after.

My cat was just diagnosed on the 18th and my head was spinning with everything.but I was so glad to find this great site and so many people here have been treating their cats a long time so I know I can do it also!Good luck!
 
I'm impressed that you're so proactive!
My baby was diagnosed the end of June and the vet still checks his BG for me.

Not being critical, but maybe you're jumping the gun? From diagnosis to acceptance can be stressful for both kitty and mom.
Obviously I'm very new and absolutely won't criticize. But you might want to give yourself some time to settle into the new normal.

Just MHO and not meant in any way to suggest I'm an expert.
 
Cc is super cooperative now but at first I had to hold her in place or chase her down. It took about two weeks and she started associating the test with a snack. She loves deli turkey and ham, so the only time I'd let her have some is during test time. She'd eat while I did the test. I often had to scoop the drop onto my nail and test from there because she wouldn't stay long.
