So last Friday 7/7 vet suggested I up Rocky's insulin he was on 1 u once a day (pm) . He said to change it to 1 u am and 2u pm . From advice on here and my own comfort I decided to only up in 1 u. So ive been giving him 1u am and 1 u pm . Its only been 3 days but at night his #'s are still in pink . Morning he seems to be in the yellow. Should I wait a few more days before deciding to adjust it. If and when i do adjust it what should I adjust it to? The vets suggestion with 1 u Am and 2 u Pm or maybe 1 u am 1.5u pm? Suggestions ? I know i need to try and test more through out the day.

Lantus does best with consistent dosing. I'd stick with 1 u AM and PM for a little longer and try hard to get more tests between those doses and at least once before bed.

Is Rocky supposed to be on all-wet diet? I did see the notes about him eating dry cat food and trying to eat dog food. They could factor into the BG numbers for a couple days. When you do want to increase if the numbers do not drop below 200, go up to 1.25 units AM and PM. Do get more tests like Kris suggests.

Yes i switched him to all wet food diet, I am having my other 2 (non diabetic) cats finish off the dry food and switch them all to wet. Better for them and better for Rocky since he wants to eat it. Hes been xtra hungry the last few days thats y he was after the dog food . I dont really know how much dry food he ate and if he was sneaking the dog food before. (my dogs a grazer ) I will continue the 1 u am and 1 u pm the rest of this week with more test and see where we are at.

What are you feeding Rocky, and how often? Unregulated cats are often always hungry, so you have to be on guard against contraband raids. We recommend several smaller meals through the first part of the cycle, as opposed to two big ones. It's easier on the pancreas. It does take longer for the effects of dry food on the BG to wear off.

It sounds like your vet is not very familiar with Lantus. As Kris mentioned, we do not recommend shooting different doses at am and pm. Because Lantus is a depot insulin, that throws everything off and the depot is constantly readjusting, which will result in wonky numbers. If you are feeding all wet (excepting the kibble raid), you can follow TR and increase the dose by .25, both am and pm.

I don't know your schedule, but I would encourage you to get as many mid-cycle tests in as you are able. Think of the spreadsheet as a jigsaw puzzle. The more pieces you can fill in, the easier it is to see the picture. Especially in the beginning, the more data you have, the better prepared you are to make dosing decisions.

It can take 6 cycles (3 days) to see what the new dose can do, like Mandy said increase can be 1.25u if you are following TR since no sign of blues.

That's pretty good, although feeding later in the cycle can cause the numbers to rise more quickly. How is his weight? Is he about where he should be?

Many of us use timed feeders to give kitty access to food while we're gone. That can be problematical if you have other pets, though.

He is under weight at 7.5lbs he should be about 10. Yeah someone else suggested time feeders but anyone of the other 3 pets could eat it especially the dog hes always looking for the cat food. What would be good times to feed him he gets shot at 7am and one at 7 pm ?

Many here feed at shot time, then +1 or +2 and +3 or +4. Of course, you have to figure out what works best with your schedule. The idea is to give most or all of the food before nadir (usually somewhere around +6, but varies by cat). The most important thing is to not feed two hours before the shot, so that test is without food influence.

Once Rocky's numbers start to come down, he will feel better and shouldn't be so hungry all the time.

Ive seen NADIR before but cant remember what it stands for? I feed at shot time (7am) i could feed him just before i leave at 8:30am Then when i get home around 2:30 again at 5:00 or should i do like 4:30 ? 7pm during pm shot 9 pm then 11 pm before bed. I dont work weekends but should i keep the same food schedule as the weekday ?

Yes, if you can. Consistency is good. 4:30 is probably better than 5. Is he really hungry then? If you skipped that feeding and gave him his last meal at 2:30, would he drive you crazy?

Yes he's very hungry around 5 he stands on his back legs reaching for the bowl before it gets to the ground. He cries at you to eat
