Hi everyone, Jacqui and Dave again.

Dave's honestly not really made any more progress. After I read here that his Wellness formula was changed, we chased it up further with one of the vets at Wellness Australia. She had apparently worked for Wellness in America, and was insistent that the only changes that had been made to the formula had been to the ingredients, but the carbohydrate count hadn't changed from 2%.

To be on the safe side, I switched him back to the older tins I had of the Wellness Core Grain Beef, Lamb & Venison. I didn't notice any real changes in the numbers.

Dave's been pretty bad with getting into our rabbit's pellets, so that might be influencing his numbers, but I'm starting to wonder if it could be his insulin. I touched on it briefly here before, but our family had a major falling out with Dave's vet due to some unprofessional behavior whilst one of our other cats was being treated for a separate issue. I've also had some issues with his vet in the past with the insulin, specifically being sold a vial that was over a year out of date.

Seeing as I have to take him to his new vet anyway, because he needs a consult before they can supply insulin, should he get a health checkup to see if that's what might be causing his slower progress? And would it be worthwhile buying a new vial to see if that helps? Don't get me wrong, he surfs in the greens for half the day, but he's getting a lot more blues than he used to, and the greens he's in are the higher ones.

All I see on Dave's SS are normal numbers with a hint of blue. Certainly don't see any reason to think the insulin isn't working. If it's been a while since he had bloodwork done it's always a good idea.

It's definitely likely I'm being overly impatient, and I need to wait for him. It does seems out of character to me though, he used to be so insulin sensitive, and now it seems like every second cycle is inactive. Thinking about it, it could be that he's actually flattening out compared to what I'm used too, and so the difference between his nadir and peak is shrinking.

Regardless, what would you recommend doing with him? If he stays fairly consistent in the greens with the occasional blue (like he's sort of doing now), do you think I should I try a drop to 0.25u?

Hi Panda, Dave looks fantastic! :woot:. I think the bigger concern was the change in ingredients resulted in higher phosphorus :(.

Here is your last post here for continuity: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/28-6-dave-a-couple-of-setbacks.179891/

When are you feeding Dave? Other than the rabbit pellets of course. :p Which are probably higher carb. Smaller meals spread out throughout the day can help. With kitties on smaller doses, and Dave may or not be there yet, a small snack around +8-9 can help bring down the preshot numbers. Might be worth an experiment.

If you do go to a new vet, make sure they look at his mouth. Inflammation there is a common source of BG issues. If you can get cartridges, or pens, that can be more economical. If you have to throw away one, it's less insulin, though I usually used it to the last drop.

Thanks for linking the post for me! He gets Wellness Core Grain Free Beef, Venison and Lamb, but only the 'old formula' before the recipe/label change. He had a bad day today (bad for him, anyway), AMPS 106, +2 88, +4 92, +6 86, PMPS 121. I know the numbers themselves aren't bad, but it's odd for him to be in the blues at AMPS and PMPS. We're hopefully getting another vial tomorrow, but that's useful to know about the cartridges. I might look into it.

Whoops, forgot to add: he gets 60-70g of food every 6 hours.

wow very nice SS, Dave is doing so well. He's probably just wanted to confuse you today and switched his BG up a bit to keep you on your toes ;)

Would it work with your schedule to give Dave three meals per cycle instead of two? Smaller meals are easier on the pancreas. Most people here stop feeding by +6, as the effects of the insulin generally are starting to wane then. Maybe feed at shot time, +2 and +4 or +3 and +5, something like that?
