Hi Everyone,

Sorry I have not been around for quite a while.
I am wondering if anyone can help me with a problem with my daughters cat.
She has a lovely little 9 month old American Shorthair, Clover, who is fed a raw home prepared diet...she is a good eater.. Ten days ago she applied Advantage flea treatment to the back of her neck. Around the same time she noticed Clover had a dreadful smelling breath....previously it was fine...and 4 days later she had a pussy eye. She took her to the vet who found her gums were very red. She checked her eyes and mouth but there were no ulcers in either. No temperature. She did not have a runny nose although she sneezed occasionally but no more than she normally did....she has a sort of squashed or flat face of the American Shorthair, and is prone to sneezing. The vet thought it might be the calcicivirus (cat flu) but not the herpesvirus as she had no ulcers in her eyes....(she didn't have ulcers in her mouth either which indicates calcicivirus so I don't know how she came to that conclusion. But I don't know much about cat flu, just what I have read).
She was given a convenia injection and some antibiotic eye ointment and sent home.
The pussy discharge went to both eyes then cleared quickly but she was left with a watery discharge and her eyes looked red. Her mouth stayed much the same.
Then she started to over groom and scratch and developed red areas and scabs on her ear tips and red areas on the skin around her eyes and her face looked swollen. She was taken back to the vet....a different vet...same practice..who noticed she had overcrowding of her teeth and had several of her first teeth still there with the second teeth visible. He thought that was probably causing her gums to be red. He also thought she had had a reaction to the Advantage flea treatment and ordered Zyrtec 1/2 tab daily. He still thought she might have the cat flu. The redness around and in the eyes and the ears was much better within 12 hours of the Zyrtec.
She has been vaccinated against the cat flu and has not been outside their apartment since they got her in March except to come to my place...inside only.. To complicate matters my new kitty ( I have a new kitty :)...sorry I haven't posted about him yet but I will) had a really sore ear....around the tip of the ear, which the vet thought was probably due to a flea allergy and it became infected around the time or just before all this happened to Clover, so I wonder if she got an infection from him......they play a lot together and have very close contact.
Except for one day early on when she was quiet, Clover has been fine and has eaten well the whole time this has been going on.We are keeping the cats apart now until Clover is better and we know if it is the flu. It is a week since she first went to the vet with the pussy eye.
My concerns are:
How could she have contracted the cat flu when she has been completely isolated from all other cats except mine and no one has been in contact with an infected cat that they know of?
Do you think it is the cat flu or something else?
Has anyone had experience with teeth that fail to fall out and the second ones come through?
Could she have got the whole thing from my kitty's infected outer ear?
The vets can't give us a definitive answer as to what she has, so I thought I would ask you all as everyone here is so knowledgeable about all cat things.
My DD has just spoken to the breeder and Clover was never in contact with cat flu as a kitten. She wondered if she might have Feline Clamydia. She also suggested Clover was taken to a vet that specialises in cats.

Thank you for reading this long post.
Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.

I've heard of vaccines causing bad reactions sometimes, so it could all be from the Advantage. This is something I keep on hand to give my cats after they have their rabies vaccine (which is required by law where I live): http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Newton-Homeopathics-Thuja/161016.aspx

I don't know if it is something that can help with a bad reaction to Advantage. You may want to research it. I don't think this company ships to Australia.

Yes, Teasel's sister had this. The retained baby teeth were extracted when she was spayed.

This too sounds like Teasel's sister who is prone to allergies and has suffered from facial swellings, what look like rodent ulcers on her lips and eosinophilic plaques on the backs of her thighs. These come and go. The facial lesions would manifest as large areas of swelling and over several days would morph into large crusty spots that lost the hair. They were terrible looking but never really bothered her. Early on I was advised to try Zyrtec (Reactine here in Canada) but learned over time that they would resolve eventually with no treatment. As she's gotten older these facial lesions rarely occur but she still gets the bumps on her thighs occasionally. Once in a great while I'll notice that the underside of her chin is a bit crusty. She eats only hypoallergenic canned food (Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Diet).

Thanks Carla. Most products are not able to be shipped to Australia. But I had a look online and we do have a Newtons Homeopathic store in Sydney so I will pass this info on to my DD.

Thanks for all that information Kris. It was very interesting. I will pass it on to my DD.

Hi Bron - good to hear from you.:bighug:

Cats can have dormat virus that comes out with stress. My Buster (GA) got calici at the shelter, and had an outbreak over a year after coming home with me. Fortunately I isolated him in time and Neko never got it.

Kris asked something I was thinking about. Any change in food proteins at all for Clover recently? I also thought allergies of some kind. Has she been on the raw a while?

Thanks Wendy for your suggestions. It's good to talk to you. I often think of you all.
Clover has been on the raw diet since she came to live with Amanda in March. I did ask if she had added anything new and she said lamb so I will tell her to stop the lamb and see if that helps.
When Buster got the calici what symptoms did he have?

At the shelter Buster got a really bad case. He was stuffed up, to the point he could only mouth breathe. He had a huge ulcer on his tonsils. Vetty thought he wouldn't make it through the night. But he was a fighter. Pulled off the streets as a stray intact feisty 10 year old male, how could I not love him. :) At home he had sniffles and sneezing, a bit of runny eye, so a milder case.

Lamb may do it. Civie Theo was allergic to raw lamb.

Thanks Wendy. Great information. I have never come across cat flu before so have no real idea about it except what I read.

Thanks everyone for your help and support!
DD is taking Clover to a cat only vet on Monday morning to see if she can get any more answers. I will let you know how she gets on.
