Jett's #s are dropping and I'm not sure how low to let them go before I give food and/or honey. I know if I give food, then I can't give him a shot. Please reply with any thoughts/experience if you are online. @DebG @Wendy&Neko @Tuxedo Mom Thank you!!
 
I am no expert but went thru the same situation recently.

63 is safe number, no action at the moment.

Can you re-test in 25 min to see where he is heading? No food, just test and post.

It is your preshot, right? Stall for now and post the test.
 
I would keep a very close eye on Jett. He's going down kind of fast. It looks like a bounce, and so he might go lower quickly.
Test every hour at least, and if he just got his shot, test every 30 minutes. Keep feeding him

Does you schedule allows to stall any longer?
Will he eat right now?

You can retest in 15 min to confirm the movement - no food if acts OK. 57 is close to unsafe but not there yet.

Thank you. I will keep updating his spreadsheet with his tests. He was dropping too quickly, so I gave him food and no shot. I know that will bring more high #s, which is so very frustrating. :banghead: He is howling too, so it's going to be a long day! I have a few hours that I need to be out of the house today, but will be testing him frequently today. Thanks for help and for responding on a holiday.

Patti, if you can enter NS (no shot) in your SS people w/expertise will understand better the situation. You can give shot later - if you schedule allows it - whenever the number become shotable and if you are able to monitor/feed later on.

If you can monitor him closely, until +7 or +8, it might be okay to give him his shot. But if you can't, don't. I'm home most of the day.

Thanks. I will add the NS. I need to wait 2 hours after food to give a shot, right?
 
When you give the PM shot tonight he will must likely be high bouncing from the lower numbers and from a skipped shot. If he is high, you can do what we call shooting through the bounce which is to shoot the same dose tonight and give him the earned a reduction of 1.75 tomorrow AM BUT, only if you can monitor him tonight.

Are you still giving Royal Canin Glycobalance food? It is higher in carbs ( 14 % carbs) than we want to see kitties on being diabetic; we like to see them 10% and under. If you do switch to lower carb food like Fancy Feast or Wellness, please get in more test especially in the PM when kitties tend to go lower.
 
I agree with Bobbie, you need to reduce his dose. And since you are following SLGS, it recommends not shooting if the preshot is below 90, so good call on the skip.

I suspect the 1.75 dose might still be too high. On June 1st you got a below 90 in the AM, but did not reduce the dose from 1.75. However, that was over a month ago and insulin needs change. For now, monitor until he starts coming up this morning, and start the new lower 1.75 unit dose tonight.

How goes the progress on removing the dry food? That can make a huge difference in how much insulin is needed.

Thanks so much for the guidance for tonight. I had to step out for 3 hours and I tested him just now and he is at 340, so his #s are on the rise! I am looking for a new dry and canned food. I have an appt with a new vet tomorrow afternoon.
 
As far as dry food, I use Young Again ( my cats get a tbsp/ day which is about 48 calories) it is very low carbs, less than 1 % per serving. You can go online Youngagainpetfood.com and request a sample. It is pricy about $ 30 a bag but it is very calorie and protein dense. A bag lasts me a long time. I get the Mature formula as it is very low phosphorus.


Good luck with the new vet and don't let him/her talk you into another RX food which = $$$$ and higher carbs.

Have you seen Dr. Pierson new food chart which has all the wet food and the carb count?
