Last week post DKA Millie tested moderate for ketones. She did recover after a visit to the vet and syringe feeding. Yesterday her BG tested very high (700s). Her BGs were very high so we figured we'd try to get ahead of any issues and took her again to see her vet. Millie was given a Cerenia injection, B12 shot, appetite stimulant and fluids. Last night she had very bad diarrhea (Cerenia?) but was very hungry (stimulants?). I gave her FortiFlora with some food. This morning she had some more soft stools (with just a bit more binding), fed her again with the FortiFlora. AMPS was 491, she was given her insulin and more food. I would like to help her get over her upset stomach. Besides the FortiFlora, is there anything else we could do to help Millie and prevent this from getting the best of her?

Today is a busy day for us with a graduate party at our house.

I can't really help much, Sylvia, except to say that my guy has had Cerenia a couple of times and had no adverse GI effects from it. Would Millie tolerate plain pumpkin in her food for the diarrhea? Are you adding extra water to all her wet food meals (ketone flush)?

Yes, she doesn't mind pumpkin. I'll add some. And I do add water and am adding extra.

Hi Sylvia and sorry about the upset tummy and diarrhea. What I use for diarrhea for Bubba is two things. Slippery Elm Bark(SEB) that I sprinkle into his food , 1/2 capsule twice a day until the diarrhea stops and then I do a maintenance dose for 3 more days and then stop it. Makes sure it is not within 2 hours of any meds as it can effect absorption. I got the SEB at the health food store.

Also from CVS I bought Florastor probiotic, S. Boulardii which is pricey but worth it's weight in gold. ( you can get it cheaper online but I needed is ASAP and paid the CVS price about 50 bucks for a bottle of 50). Sprinkle 1/2 capsule into the food and continue until the diarrhea stops and I do a maintenance dose of 1/4 capsule of it for a few more days. Those two things yielded amazing results for Bubba. There is a cheaper S. Boulardii brand online called Jarrow but they add something to it( MOS) that makes it bitter and it can't be sprinkled into the food because most cats won't eat it because of the bitterness.

Hope this helps you.

I have some SEB, I will add to her food along with the FortiFlora and pumpkin. I guess if I get the Florastor I shouldn't use the FortiFlora. I also have Fast Balance that I use for my dog but have never used with my cat. I just gave her water since she didn't seem to be drinking much. The house is busy today and I don't think it's helping her even though she is locked in an air conditioned bedroom, no one allowed in so she can rest.

Thanks for the info Bobbie.

When was her last BM prior to the loose stools? Had she been constipated by chance? Sometimes, when cats are blocked up, the stool behind the constipation has a lot of water in in. Once the cat clears the blockage, they can have loose stools for a little bit till this clears out. Constipated kitties will have high blood sugars too that drop rapidly once they are able to go. The pumpkin will help both constipation and loose stools.

Glad the ketones are remaining negative. You should consider increasing the doses more rapidly, you are testing enough that this should be safe. When cats are in high numbers, and doses are held too long, they get insulin resistance and it takes even higher doses to get those numbers down.

Sorry for the delayed response was off the computer yesterday.

She wasn't constipated beforehand. Although all of this is good information to know. I think I need to start writing down all this great information, too much to remember.

With help and guidance from the board, I'll definitely be increasing insulin quicker. I wish I would have known that at the beginning. Someone probably mentioned it, but I didn't 'get it' til now.
