Update: My vet is on vacation, but another vet at the practice called and said the results of the Free-t4 test looked ok so CC doesn't need anything for her thyroid at the moment and they will just test it again with her next physical. I'm glad :D

Ok, so CC just went for a check-up the other day. Mostly everything was ok but the Vet did find a few things.

First is a lesion on her tooth, so in a few weeks she's going back to have a tooth pulled. (poor kitty)... it's not infected, but she did flinch when the vet pressed on it, so I'd rather take care of it now then to have it abcess and throw her out of remission.

She also got started on Adaquen for her arthritis which I'm happy about since she's been having some trouble lately. Only one shot so far and I see a slight improvement, so I'm hopeful it will help.

So the unexpected. She said that overall the bloodwork looked ok (I'm waiting for that to be emailed to me), but two things showed up.

1 Elevation in Tryglicerides which the vet said could have been attributed to her eating prior to going to the vet.... I will try reducing the fat in her food a bit and see if that helps.

and

2 Thyroid in the "grey zone" slightly above the normal range... so she wants to do a free T4 test... to see if she has overactive thyroid. This really surprised me as one of the symptoms is loss of weight and hyperactivity... she has actually gained weight in the last few months (getting pretty pudgy)... mostly because she HASN'T been active as her arthritis was making her uncomfortable. other symptoms are a poor coat (which he has a bit of but mostly because she can't reach her back to groom comfortably), increased appetite and thirst which I haven't observed at all... she leaves food behind. So I ok'ed the extra test anyway just to see what's going on... but as I said it really surprised me. Anyone here every have their cat diagnosed with overactive thyroid without the typical weight loss?

OH! just got the email with the labs.... maybe some of our lab reading experts can take a look?

The only part I can comment on is the high cholesterol. I never heard of it until my cat had high cholesterol.

What I learned:
It's fairly common in cats.
It affects all blood work and some vet in-office machines are not capable of giving correct results because of it.
Much of my cat's blood work went from read in-house to, had to be sent out.
No diet or any changes recommended by local vet or vets @ university.
It can be transitory. Last blood work at university, my cat didn't show high cholesterol.
Blood can get "thick" and difficult to draw via veins.
No vets were able to explain why my cat got it or how to lower it.

I wonder if it can be affected by lack of exercise. do you think that could have been a factor for your cat? TOday is the first time in MONTHS she's been willing to play.... because her arthritis was hurting her! I am home this summer and am going to make it a priority to get her moving a bit every day.

Some of my cats also have high cholesterol and my vet is not concerned.
Without clinical signs, as the note says, I would not be concerned with a T4 of only 2.9

Ty I guess I won't worry about it until the next test comes back as long as she's still acting normal.

I was thinking my cat went from high cholesterol to not because of better fd control or getting otj. Guess that theory is out since your cat is otj.

I have no idea why it doesn't concern the vets I've asked. It's a thing in humans, seems like it should be a thing in cats.

I think my cat's fat intake is lower with his canned food diet. Maybe that helps? Is there a lot of fat in YA? I don't know all the ins and outs of that food.

I have been told that the cholesterol is linked to the FD--Dre has it too.

Maybe you could do a regular thyroid again in a month or so just because there seems to be no symptoms.

If you already are seeing results with adequan after 1 shot you will likely have success with it.:)

I started the boys on it years ago (now 18 and 19) our loading dose was every 4 days for 8 shots then 1x a month but now we are about every 5-7 days. When I saw Rico (19) leaping up the stairs 2 at a time wanting me to chase him I couldn't help but smile....
your 19 year old cat leaping and playing......PRICELESS!

There is a lot of fat in ya.... I'm sure that is a contributor. Vet said she wasn't really concerned with the triglycerides because it could have just been that she ate recently. It was more the t4 levels that concerned her.

I'm concerned with the phosphorus level too.... I'm going to cut out most fish between now and next test and see if it helps.

I can post a couple of his cbc-s if you want to look for patterns. I'd like to have more info as well.

My kitty was hyperthyroid without symptoms. But, my kitty was always skittish, so activity wasn't a really good indicator. And she always was a smaller cat, kitten-like actually, so there was no noticeable weight loss.
Runswith T4 tested at 5 (I believe, it's been about 5 years now...) the first time we had her tested. She was started off on pills to manage it until ultimately a wonderful vet convinced us that a year supply of pills would have paid for the cure. So we got her the cure, and never had to deal with pills again. After successful treatment she did gain weight (which I assume would have happened long ago if she wasn't hyperthyroid... ) and she became less skittish and more outgoing with others.
I'll look forward to checking in as you get more info, and if you have more questions about our process, please do ask. I love talking about my cured gamma ray kitty!

Thanks! I should hear on Wed what the results are. Hopefully it's nothing that needs treatment yet.
