Mayton threw up a lot last night and legs are getting worse

When I woke up this morning, I saw Mayton threw up 4 times all along the hall way, and once in my room. He threw up in my room at +9 so it was all probably around that time. All of the throw up was just liquid, no food in it at all. I believe they didn't get their usual midnight snack in the automatic feeders because my dad (who always sets them) fell asleep on the couch. He did feed them at +10 though when he woke up. He has never thrown up this many times before, and its never usually liquid. So I am worried that something is wrong. Also, when I woke up Mayton wouldn't stop meowing very loudly for like 10 minutes. I fed him because I thought that was why he was meowing but he just continued to meow after that. I thought that was weird too.

One another note Mayton's neuropathy is worse. He basically is always walking on his hocks now. Everyday we have to pick large clumps of litter off of his legs because he just walks straight into where he peed, and doesn't kick litter over it any more. I also noticed he really only pees like twice a day, and at those times he pees a LOT, so much that it won't fit in the scoop at once. I guess he holds it because it is probably hard for him to walk in the litter box. That has probably been happening for a month now I just haven't mentioned it. We give him 2 tablets of the Zobaline everyday, one in the morning and one at night. I believe we started him on the pills on April 20th, we started him out on one, then increased to 2 recently. I feel like the pills aren't working which means all we can do it get his BG under control? I don't know why his numbers are always all over the place, it feels like it is impossible to get him "under control".

I'm so sorry you're having trouble finding a good dose range for Mayton. :bighug: I think he needs a higher dose even though he throws out the odd dark green. With his history of DKA you might have to feed higher carb food so you can get enough insulin into him. There's the option of trying Levemir if you can't get his cycles to flatten out a bit more. He's certainly not an easy kitty. If you could get more tests scattered over cycles, including evening cycles, that would help to see what he's doing. As for the neuropathy, better BG control should help along with the Zobaline (which can takes months to work).

Let's see what the pros think.

Have you tested for ketones recently?

Throw up (white foam/no food) usually indicates stomach acid. I agree with Kris, I think more tests would help see what he is doing and help decide what to do as far as dosing.

I am wondering about UTI - since he is "holding" it that concerns me. Anyway you can add a box or two around the house to make it easier for him to get to?

Did you test him at this point? George would come and meow insistently at me when his numbers were dropping fast/ or if he was in the 40's, just wondering if he was trying to let you know his BG was low??

In all honesty Mackenzie, I think it's entirely likely that you are missing some lows especially in the pm cycle. Can you always try to get a before bed test?? it would be really helpful. Even if he is red, we have seen how Mayton can drop, so you shouldn't be complacent when you see a high PS. Grabbing some extra spot checks whenever you can will really help fill in the blanks, for example, last night at +9, why not grab a test then? Especially as he had been sick and was behaving weirdly.

The vomiting may well have been a result of acid tummy, if he is used to getting a +9 snack and he missed that.

How's your schedule at the moment?

I tested him at +5 and he was 262. I can get another one at +7 or +8 today too. I will really try to test him at least 4 times a day. We just got back from vacation (the week where our pet sitter tested him everyday at +6) and then I was at college orientation the next few days. But I'm home now and won't be leaving for multiple days at a time, like recently, until August. So I can really try to test him a lot this next month.

I'm glad he's back in yellow, much better than black.
That amps this morning may have been a result of him feeling icky, or else a bounce from a visit into lower numbers last night.

It's good that you will have a little more time now, I knew that your schedule with school was difficult but hadn't realized you'd also been away.
You don't need to go mad with the testing, I think if in the am cycle you could get a +2 and then one other test somewhere between +5 and +7, (mix it up) on most days it will be really informative. Remember if you find he is dropping dramatically at +2, because its early on in the cycle you may need to test earlier than the +5, following up with a +3 (or earlier, let the numbers guide you).

In the pm cycle, (depending on what time you shoot) I would try and always get a +2 and a before bed test, again if you find he is dropping dramatically, you may need to follow up. He saw a 72 on this dose, and I'm suspicious that he may be dropping lower from time to time, so be on your toes and watch out for those active cycles where he may be clearing a bounce and going off at the deep end.

I hope he's feeling better, and no more icky vomit.
Sending vines, just in case.
