Fang won't eat and diarrhea

I'm new to this so forgive the essay. Fang was put on vetsulin on June 1 2017. He went from 1U week 1 with 298 levels, then 113 with 1-1/2U week 2. He was taken to get a curve done at vet and he crashed to 59 they said and had me start 1-1/4U next day. I decided to get a ReliOn Prime meter and started testing at home. Week 4 he seemed better without shot because he was in my opinion not eating enough for shot. Will be calling vet tomorrow but he has had diahrrea for 3 days and not eating and very lethargic. So far he was only acting back "too normal Fang" for couple days out of this entire ordeal. Any suggestions on course of action? Simply at a loss

His level yesterday was 78, 69, 72, 65. If I'm doing it right. Seems so far from vets numbers. Today so far was 69 and 58 at 4:45pm.

Have you stopped insulin all together or did you resume the 1.25 unit dose? Are those numbers from yesterday and today without insulin? If so, your cat does NOT need insulin. If he's on insulin the dose might be too high.
 
I wish I knew more to help but what advice I can give is this, try warming up a bit of his fancy feast. The warmed up food smells stronger. If not you could try giving him gravy or sauce fancy feast to help those numbers! If it goes too low try to get him to eat some honey or rub some on his tongue. I don't think I'm knoledhae enough yet to advise on the diahrea but if you can get him to eat any thing at all, possibly tuna, or even treats?
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can come input some solid advise!! I hope fang starts turning up some good news soon! Those low numbers Make me concerned.

Thank you for replying Yes I have not given insulin in 2 days. These are readings from past 2 days with no insulin. I saw a link here that said those numbers are good for him with a human meter. I'm really worried about his lack of food and diarrhea.

I have given him karo and gravy ff about 4 days ago when I didn't have a meter to read he didn't need insulin. I got a meter next day

OK. Those numbers are low and indicate he might not need insulin. They can also be low because of not eating. That issue must be addressed ASAP because a cat who doesn't eat is in danger of developing hepatic lipidosis. He might need anti nausea and appetite stimulant meds. I think a vet appointment is the way to go.

Thank you so much Warming it up did get his interest more. He only ate couple spoonfuls worth but I'll take anything right now.
 
In addition to Vet visit, have you changed his diet suddenly? How is his hydration? You can do a snap test to check. Pinch up some skin on his back and if it snaps back down, he should be OK. If it goes back down flat slowly, he might be dehydrated. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand to get an idea of speed, hopefully you are hydrated :smuggrin:. Definitely sounds like he may not need insulin anymore but the new issues seem to happen on weekends :facepalm:. Please let us know what the Vet says :bighug:

Pretty cool way to gauge hydration. Skin goes back down pretty fast. Not as fast as mine on hand but looks promising. He doesn't drink much water. Hasn't since switch month ago to wet food. Level at 8 was 54 and so far hasn't had any diahrrea since the 2:30'ish bout. Thank you so much for all the help and advice

It's vet visit official! FangTastic is in remission. For now . They gave fluid therapy for mild hydration and put him on 7 days of 1x 1.1cc metronidazole for diahrrea. Trying Purina DM (which is a hefty $2/ can ) in thoughts that the FancyFeast Classic was giving him the issues. This I have a bad feeling will be trial and error figuring out. Very happy they warned me about the foaming from the metronidazole, that is creepy stuff. Thank you everyone for all the help. Now to keep testing weekly to see if/ or when we may go back into needing insulin.
 
Metronidazole is very bitter. When I had to give it to one of my cats, I ended up wearing more of it than I got in the cat, lol. Congratas on remission!!!:):):)

I totally can picture that lol. Was shown how to hold him by scruff and inject it on side of mouth angle towards back of throat. Went smooth today. Now that he's aware of what's up tomorrow will be interesting .

Worst part was the run after drooling and shaking it off like a St Bernard
 
Yup, that's what happened with my kitty. She was okay the first time, but once she tasted it, it was a whole other ball game, lol. It took myself and my two grown sons to try and hang onto this tiny 5 lb cat, and she still won the day, managing to deposit most of the med on all of us. :facepalm:And she would run through the house with great long trailers of drool, shaking them everywhere! I will do almost anything to avoid ever having to give her that again!!!:joyful:
 
Unfortunately once they get wind of what's up with medication it can be a real battle. I had to keep changing where I gave the Leo the med so he would be caught off guard because he started to associate the location with the med. Maybe a compounding pet pharmacy would have some ideas as to a different form or flavor for the metro. ?? I'm fortunate in that Leo doesn't seem to have a lot of bitter taste buds and the taste doesn't seem to upset him- he just hates the fact I'm putting anything in his mouth that is not food.
 
There is another form for this med and one of the posters here gave the information about it. She gets it from her vet and it does not cause the drooling and salivation the tablet causes. It has to be ordered through a pet pharmacy I believe or the vet has to order it special. This reminds me to check the previous post on it and hope I can remember where it was. I think they were called medi melts, or something similar.
 
I've been very lucky and fang hasn't resisted the liquid very much. He's not digging it but he takes it lol. The drooling hasn't been as extreme as first day. It did its job fast thank goodness he's got solid Since day 3 of med and he's eating excellent. His coat looks super shiny and no dandruff anymore.
