Morning from California
Today is Muffin's first day on insulin. I decided on a .75 unit to start. We will test as advised in the protocols. The low carb diet worked somewhat but not enough. We feed her as much lc canned food (no dry at all right now but thinking about zero carb as treats later) as she wants since she is under weight. I'm confused on the feeding. Is that ok on TR? Any advice would be appreciated. Have a great day!

I free feed on TR. Yum is a nibbler and she shares her food dishes. Lots of members swear by those automatic feeders, though. I try to keep food available at all times, although sometimes I pick it up 2 hours prior to preshot tests.

Yum is adorable. I only feed canned to Muffin so not sure how auto feeders would work for that :) Do you know what they feed in the auto feeders? Muffin is in a sanctuary setting and she doesn't get dry food so hard on her because we have to put her in a pen or pull all the other kitties food so she doesn't eat the dry. Logistics are a nightmare on this one. I just want her to gain some weight and feel better as we all do. Good to know you free feed canned and it works. I will see if we can pull food 2 hours before preshot. thanks so much!!

Thank you for admiring my Yum. :^)
They do put wet food in the auto feeders. I think @Judy and Boomer use an auto feeder with wet food, also @LizzieInTexas. Some people put ice underneath it to keep the food fresh.
I think the main goal of the people who use auto feeders is to make sure the cat eats regularly throughout the day, nights included.
I believe there is a low carb dry food abbreviated YA, but I am avoiding dry food completely now.
Good luck with Muffin. Kudos to you for treating a diabetic cat in a sanctuary setting!

To answer your question, it is usually best to feed several small meals during the cycle. Most cats on insulin do better if the food is given before nadir as feeding after nadir can, in some kitties, nip the duration of the insulin.

Having said that, there are some cats that eat after the nadir with no effect on the BG. It will take some experimenting on your part to see how it works for Muffin.

If Muffin gets hungry later in the cycle, instead of canned LC food, you could either give her some boiled chicken breast or even freeze dried chicken breast. We also recommend that you don't feed in the two hours before shot time so the preshot BG is not affected by food.

Yes I use a PetSafe 5 with canned food. There is no room in mine for an ice pack however I've heard there may be another model out there with room for ice. The canned food stays fresh enough; doesn't dry out at all

Thanks Marje! I believe you were here the first time I joined in 2013 for my boy Purrcee.

Hi Julie,
i just had a pick @your SS and there was quite a drop at +3 from the preshot test. I hope you are able to take another test to make sure that further lowering goes smoothly. Offer more food, LC if Muffin keeps dropping by large number of points.
You got great advises on food. I only wanted to add that my kitty gained fairly quickly on Friskies Classic Pates, all well below 10% carbs and extremely budget friendly. You can choose from Dr. Lisa Pierson Food Chart here - or see the sticky Links to FOOD CHARTS @the top Health Links Section.

When/if you get a test - can you please post it here?

Thanks for responding! We are testing at +3 and +6 in the am and +2 and+3 in pm. Preshots are at 7am and 7 pm. I know what you mean; it dropped quickly. Do you think we should test before +6?? I will post after each test. We had her on Friskies Classic when we were just doing LC food (no insulin) but it kept her pretty high. Started giving her lower carb than Friskies like Wellness and Fancy Feast. Now that she is on insulin I thought it might be good to keep her LC food the same rather than mix it up and try to get a better feel for her numbers. Does that sound like a good idea? I have printed the food chart and take it everywhere :) It's such a balancing act between trying to get her to gain weight and keeping her numbers down. She does like most food so that helps.

I am still very new to this also, but I had a vet tell me to pick one kind of wet food and stick with it. He told me the slight variations in the different flavors of food could be enough to keep Gizmo from becoming regulated on insulin. I don't know how true it is, but we just picked the one that both of my cats ate the best and now that's all they get.

Hmmmm, not heard that before.
FWIW, I had a range of flavours/brands that I used with George, and rotated them. He now get's 4 flavours, I have limited choice now because he needs low phosphorous and low carb, and he's been of the juice for over a year.
The important thing is to make sure that his food choices are low carb(under 10%), you can use this searchable food list from Dr Lisa to help you with your choices

Did you get any later tests? A +9 or 10 might be interesting. It is suggested when you start on Lantus to test a bit more frequently. Great to see blue so early on.

Thanks Wendy. She's back up at PMPS 277. Going to test +2,3,4. Won't be able to test after +4 until AMPS at 7 am. Hopefully all good through the night.
