Forgive me if this should go on Main Health but it is a question directed at Lantus users. I've been doing some reading on it (debating switching) but I came across articles mentioning a "new" Lantus. Have any of you heard of Basaglar? Supposedly it's the same as Lantus (Glargine) but less expensive. Has anyone used this new formula in the kitty?

Just curious :)
Thank you in advance!

Hey Yong! Yes, one of our users here @Chris & China switched to it and was using it but, I do believe if my memory serves me well, she has switched back to Lantus. Hopefully she will weigh in. But, as far as the switch from ProZinc to Lantus is quite comparable with the exchange of U 40 syringes to
U 100.

Yes, China was the official "tester" for Basaglar so we'd know how it worked compared to Lantus

It works pretty much exactly the same once the depot is established, but it's not a lot cheaper than Lantus

I added the information about Basaglar to the "Insulin from Canadian Pharmacies" thread

You can look at her spreadsheet....I've clearly marked lines for when we started and stopped....the main reason I stopped with the Basaglar was the pen was acting wonky all the sudden and I wasn't sure how long it was supposed to last, so since I'd just bought 5 new pens of Lantus before volunteering to test the Basaglar, I went back to it

Is there any information about the ingredients in that insulin?

What does official tester mean? You tried it out as a volunteer so people on the board could ask you questions or you were in a clinical trial? Or something else?

My cat will be changing insulin. Vet thinks cat can nit tolerate some of the inert ingredients and we are having great back and forth discussions.

My next choice is levemer and vet said no, only because he's never used it. I said that was not an ok reason to deny my cat meds. It would be great to look into another option .

Thank you.

Yes, I tried it because it's starting to show up because so many insurance companies are refusing to cover Lantus and are only paying for Basaglar now. DCIN had some sample pens but nobody had ever used it, so after a lot of thinking, I volunteered.

I figured it was best to test it on a cat that was as tightly regulated as China is so we'd really know the difference (if there was any)....If we tested it on an unregulated cat, or one not as tight as China, there's no way to know if any changes were due to differences in the insulin or how it worked or if it was just the cat.

Since I was the only one who offered, I was the "official guinea pig" I guess!

Here's a pretty good article on Basaglar

Hope it's ok to bump my thread up. Hoping to get some more insight. Will just bump it this once now that traffic is back to normal :)
As far as I know, Chris and China are the only ones that used Basaglar. But, I will tell you this, with the switch from U 40 syringes that ProZinc uses to the U100 for Lantus, the cost is very comparable. So, if you decide to just go with the Lantus ( and I would suggest using the Solo Star Pens rather than a vial) the cost is really pretty much the same.

Thanks Bobbie :). Chris and China did respond, just bumping it once in case someone knows someone outside the forum maybe? Good to know about syringe prices and yes if I switch I will got with the pens (mini vials). Pretty sure the one Vet will be happy to hear if I decide to switch. She prefers Lantus and said negative things about Prozinc :(. Just because someone doesn't understand or have experience with something doesn't mean you should say bad things, maybe that's just me

ProZinc has been successful for lots of cats. I have a friend whose cat is in remission and she only used PZ. Its a decent insulin! Butttt. ECID. If you don't feel like its working, then certainly Lantus (and its generic) is a good choice.

I am not familiar with all the mechanics of ProZinc, but Maury does seem to be a bit all over the place (looking at his SS), so it could be worth it to try a diff insulin approach. Though, as others said, you'll have to get new needles too.
