This morning AMPS (268) ! Where have those blue numbers gone?

I am starting to think I need to figure out a testing schedule of the most important times to test rather than doing curves of tests every 2 hours. Ricky had one flat day on 2.75 units now I'm going to 3 units but his numbers have gone up.

I wish I could get to the point of being able to test him where ever he's sleeping and not have to move him.

Hi Pam,

I agree with you that doing a curve once a week, doesn't always give you all the info you want, especially if it happens to be a flat bounce cycle.
Although his PS have been higher, it's entirely possible that he is going lower during the cycle.
Depending on what your availability(sorry can't remember what your work schedule is) is I might try (if his ps remain in the high yellows) getting a +3/or +4 and +6/or+7 in the morning cycle, and grab a just before bed test every evening.
It doesn't have to be at the same time everyday, intact we encourage folk to mix it up a bit as it helps build a clearer picture.

Personally I'm a fan of getting spot checks every day rather than the curve once a week. I find the data gathered that way is more informative.
Try not to forget that there are two cycles a day, and they can differ considerably, so that before bed test (even if it's a +1) can be very enlightening.

Gill, The question is how many tests per day are reasonable, and not going to bug Ricky too much? Are you suggesting testing 5 times a day? It would be OK if it didn't seem to bother Ricky. I just tried today to do a +2 test while he was resting on the floor but he tried to squirm away. When I put him on the counter he doesn't try to jump off because of his weak legs. But any where else, if he can get away he would try.

Will keep on trying. I think I have to stick to tests on the counter for now, unless some day Ricky gets more used to this.

Gill, I just did a +6 comparing Relion Prime (208) and Relion Confirm (199). I am interested in switching to Relion Confirm as it says it takes less blood so I was wondering how accurate it would be. Some times with ear prick I don't get enough blood for the Relion Prime.

I will keep trying spot checks !

Those two readings are pretty similar. You can get 20% variance even using the same Meyer.

We have plenty of folk using the prime and the confirm, I don't know of any problems with either. If you find the confirm easier to use because of the smaller sample size, I'd go with that.

Yes, if you can.

I hope the twice daily dosing helps with his neuropathy.

From yesterday's condo:

So far every time I test Ricky I pick him up and take him to the kitchen counter, where I have all the supplies set up and me wearing a headlight and high power glasses. The thing is this is disruptive for Ricky unless he happened to be sitting right there near the kitchen at the time.

Ricky has the habit if flicking his ear right when the needle comes near. I usually get a drop of blood just from that needle nicking his ear while he flicks his ear. But then he will also continue to flick his ear so I have to try to calm his head so the blood doesn't fly away.

Basically what I'm saying is I don't have a situation where Ricky hardly knows it's happening. I wish I could just test him where ever he happens to be. But putting him on the counter means he won't try to get away.

ECID. What works for one doesn't always work for another! Sounds like you have Ricky figured out pretty well.

I really think that, eventually, Ricky will become accustomed to testing. Are you giving him a treat each time, whether you get blood or not? Try to calm yourself before you try to test - cats really do feel our stress, and it agitates them, too. I always made a big fuss over my kitties before and after the test, so that they looked forward to it. I know you don't want to upset him, but remember, you are doing this for his own good, and possibly, one day you will get him into remission and will only have to test weekly!

Tricia, Usually I brush Ricky as a treat afterward. It seems he likes lying on the counter because after the test he appears to enjoy remaining on the counter. I'm trying a different Relion meter that requires less blood, to see if this will help for those times when I only get a spec of blood. It could mean less failed attempts.

Gill, I just did a PM +5 test (196). So far I'm not seeing neuropathy getting better. I just starting giving the Zobaline twice a day to see if that helps.

Ricky still really feels that lancet !

Just wanted to say that it would be advisable to stick to one meter, use the relion that requires less blood as that makes it easier, keep the other as a backup.
Otherwise you'll likely end up wondering if the difference you are seeing is real or because of the meter.;):)
