I was definitely surprised by that BG this morning. Last night she was 85...maybe a bounce? Maybe trying to mess with MamaBean's head???? I dunno....

Trix seems to be basically back on track for the most part, with that bit of "weirdness" that I mentioned yesterday. Because I have to overthink everything, I do wonder if it's a side-effect from the current AB...I have noticed a possible trend that she seems pretty normal until about an hour after I give the AB. But, of course, it is so hard to tell. I just did her AB a few minutes ago and before that she seemed perfectly typical normal Trixie, so I'll see if the trend continues with "weirdness" setting in in an hour. It's almost like she gets a little bit loopy and seems a little sleepier than normal cat sleepy...who knows. It's nothing too drastic, but for someone like me, it seems noticeable. I hate being an FD helicopter MamaBean...I do drive myself crazy.

Still waiting to hear back about the culture. The office was closed yesterday, so I'm not surprised I haven't gotten any info yet...plus it might not be ready yet.

The weather yesterday really took a toll on me and dragged me down...I could not find motivation to do anything. Unfortunately the weather is the same today...damp, cold, dreary, gray...it is going on way too long here. But I am vending at a bead show this weekend so I have to force myself into action.

Prayers to all...

Amy

I am right there with you on the FD Helicopter page. Sometimes, I wish I could get away from myself. LOL

Good luck with the culture report. Fingers and paws crossed.

I couldn't agree more. FD has been a blessing and a curse....the bonding is wonderful, but I was never such a stressed out helicopter over every little silly nuance before FD....if I drive myself crazy, I can only imagine how DH feels! He's very attached as well, but he's always cool as can be...I'm jealous of that ability he has.

It's so hard to not worry constantly... especially when they don't act like their normal selves and can't tell you what's wrong (or if there's anything wrong at all). :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Vetty just called with results...no infection or crystals. The mystery continues as to why she improves while on ABs, and backslides a week after going off. We could do an ultrasound, and I'm debating the idea...the only thing is, we can't really do anything with any information it may provide (ie, if she has a stone or polyp, etc) because she cannot have any sort of surgery - all we can do is what we are doing, which is treat symptoms. I'm not sure if it's worth the added stress (for both of us) or not...but I am mulling it over. Vetty did not feel anything suspicious on palpation last Friday.

Ugh....I don't want any infection or anything like that, but at the same time I want an answer. I am so tired of "I don't know".

We are going to continue this course of ABs anyway, just in case it is doing something that we can't identify (it seems to be???)....

Is it possible there's a kidney infection vs a UTI? Kidney infections don't always show up on a C & S and they are notoriously difficult to treat. It can take a much longer course of ABs.

Antibiotics as anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract
Although the empirical use of some antibacterial agents in various inflammatory diseases has proved beneficial in the past, it is only recently that the therapeutic anti-inflammatory potential of cyclines and macrolides has received attention worldwide. Other drugs like fosfomycin and some quinolones are also contenders for this role. Owing to the complexity of the inflammatory process, which involves many redundant cellular effectors and soluble mediators, and the obscure etiopathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases (some of which may be secondary to persistent infections), the precise mechanisms underlying the therapeutic benefit of anti-inflammatory antibiotics remain to be elucidated. Structure-activity relationships are the key to developing new anti-inflammatory agents derived from antibacterial drugs.

Maybe this is why the AB helps.

It is possible, but I don't know if it's probable at this point...we did do 6 weeks of Zeniquin that ended on April 11...then restarted for another 4 weeks on April 22 because she peed right outside the box again (she's never far from the box - she gets her front end in but doesn't get the back end in.). After the first dose, the butt over the edge peeing stopped.

At the moment, my brain isn't thinking straight (really, what else is new these days????). I know the vet did say kidney infection is possible, but doesn't think it's probable. She did say that sometimes it doesn't show up in culture, but that it usually does.

It's baffling to all of us at this point. Her kidneys are bad - is that it? Is it a stubborn kidney infection? Is it idiopathic? Personally I'm a little suspicious if Wellness - 5 years ago, our previous vet (from the same practice) mentioned they had seen an uptick of cats with urinary issues eating all varieties of Wellness. This conversation completely slipped my mind, but for whatever reason popped back in last week. Trix started having problems about a month after I had switched her from Fancy Feast to Wellness. So at the end of last week, I did switch her off Wellness and on to Dave's and Newman's Own. Is that why she's feeling just about like her old self today???

She's currently on Simplicef, which I think if it's a kidney infection isn't going to do much - so I don't know that I'd be seeing the improvement I've seen since last Friday when they drew the urine for the culture. Maybe it is idiopathic and the anti-inflammatory properties of the ABs are what's helping. Oh, she's had a couple rounds of metronidazole, too, because she's also had some anal gland issues, and just like with the other ABs, after a few doses, she perked up into a fresh new kitty.

Once again, after one dose of the AB on Friday she hasn't peed outside the box once. That's the weird part...the ABs seem to be doing something, but nothing is indicating the need for ABs in labs....

Too many coincidences and I can't seem to make sense of any of it. (Ha, this is the kind of babbling poor DH get subjected to!)

Just spoke with vetty about considering using an AB that would be more appropriate for a kidney infection; she said that since she seems to be improving with the Simplicef it's best to continue down that path so we can hold the Baytril in our back pocket if she needs it. If she starts to not do well with the Simplicef, then we'll consider bumping her up.....

Sending prayers and healing vines for Trixie, :bighug:s for you!
I don't know if it would help, since you don't know what's causing her problems, but if it's related to her urinary system you could try d-mannose. Squallie used to get lots of UTIs and irritations, but once I put him on d-mannose he's never had another one.

Thank you! Yep, ordering d-mannose is on my to-do list for today!
