what us the difference between the Lantus Solostar Pen and the Lantus 3mL pen? Ooter was prescribed the 10 mL bottle but the vet said I could get a 3 mL pen if I can find a pharmacy that will split up a box. So what is the difference between those two and does anyone know any pharmacies that are a good bet?

Thanks!

They are the same exact thing...."Solostar" is just the name of the pens....You still use regular insulin syringes to pull the insulin out of the pen just like a vial. Take the top off and there's a rubber stopper just like on the vial.

Most of us are buying our Lantus from Canada because it's 1/3rd the price. All the information is in this "Insulin from Canadian Pharmacies" post

Occasionally you can find a pharmacy that will split open a box, but they are few and far between! About all you can do is start making phone calls. Some Target stores seem to be more willing that most, as well as hospital pharmacies or pharmacies that work with nursing homes

Thanks! I actually found a RiteAid that would do it here in Santa Rosa, CA after calling around a bunch. So my understanding now is that the 'regular' ones are just refills for the Solostar pens, all of which I can use like a vial. I hope to be able to buy it from Mark's Marine after this round (which I need by Thursday) if it works for Ooter and when I have time to give them the 3 weeks shipping they need to get it here from Canada.

I have time to give them the 3 weeks shipping they need to get it here from Canada.

It's actually more like 5-7 days....I know their website says different, but the longest I've ever heard it taking was 10 days (and that was me because I'd ordered the day before Canada Day and 4th of July which screwed up the postal system)

They handle insulin a little differently from their other medications.....that's why it's always $25 shipping

Last time I ordered, I called on Monday afternoon and had it in my mailbox on Friday

Excellent! Thanks for letting me know. I will definitely take advantage of that tip for next time I have to order.
