Ok, now I got the supplies. Vet says once a week or not at all as long as she is eating. Not doing that, soooo,
do I test daily? twice daily? before she eats? after she eats? how long after or before she eats? She is a basically a free feeder but always eats some when I put out a new can.

She can eat the low carb wet food throughout day just make sure to pick up 2 hours before eating so number is not influenced by food. The minimum is before shots. Amps and pmps. To make sure kitty is safe to shoot. Getting a couple through day can also help see when insulin is helping her the best. I'm a bit of a shotaholic , you can see by my spread sheet. All the more info the better. Did you set up a spread sheet? To record her numbers. And everyone offering advise can see the same thing.

Ah, just read your other post-- Lantus 3U 2X day.

In that case, the main thing about mealtimes is just to be sure that she has food "on board" when the insulin starts to take effect, usually a couple hours after you give the shot. Unlike the faster-acting insulins, you don't have to give a full meal before the shot itself, but a lot of us follow the procedure "test, feed, shoot" at shot time-- test to make sure she's high enough to shoot, feed to make sure she's got an appetite, and give the shot, all within a few minutes.

Thanks, helpful. Just wish it wasn't a holiday weekend. Can't get to vet til Wed. as she is also taking a long weekend.

I'd add a signature that includes that you are using lantus and the dose. When was she diagnosed? How long on insulin? It would be great if you also start posting on the lantus forum. Since lantus is dosed depending on the low point or nadir, mid cycle tests whenever possible and tests before you shoot would be the minimum. A test about two hours after injection will give a clue about how the cycle will go when you aren't home or are asleep.

Also let us know if you've decided on TR or SLGS. They're are links to both of them in the Lantus forum :)
