Hiya, Has anyone tried using homeopathic medicines in their cat? In NZ we have Naturo Pharm and I was thinking of trying Belladonna and Phosphorus (suggested on a homeopathic website for DM in cats).

Phosphorus? Be cautious, too much phosphorus is hard on kitty kidneys.

I did some searching, but I can't find anything that says belladonna is indicated for feline diabetes. Lots of other conditions, but since the action is on the CNS I don't see where it would be of much help with diabetes.

They suggested Belladonna 30c, Thuja 30c, Natrum Muriaticum 6c an Phosphorus 6c. Never heard of the 2nd and 3rd ones. I am looking to see if there is a vet near my home town who is experienced in homeopathy in cats. I will see if I can find the webpage again

Did you get your cats off the high carb dry food and into wet pate foods? That's where you can help the most.
She has been mostly on classic fancy feast with some royal canin diabetic biscuits occasionally during the day. We are going to add in some raw meat too. She has lost more weight since being on this diet and her BS hasn't changed. I'm sure she has acromegaly now as her bottom jaw is starting to stick out

I wouldn't give any of that without speaking to a vet first. Esp phosphorus

No I wouldn't, just wondered if anyone else has had success is using any sort pf homoepathic remedy. I only did a quick google search and found these suggestions. Would definitely research more before giving her anything like that

Stop the dry food all together. It's not helping her. How often and how many cans are you feeding? What is her dose? Which insulin? Are you testing at home? What have her numbers been the past few days? It would help tremendously if you would set up a spreadsheet.

If you could set up a signature with info like date diagnosed, food you're feeding, insulin type, dose, and any other health concerns that would be great. Just click on your name in the upper right corner and choose your screen name, then choose signature.

She can't live on fancy feast alone, she loses too much weight. Im sorry but I don't believe a veterinary prescription biscuit designed for diabetic animals can be harmful. She has 10 units Caninsulin 2x day. Can only test her on the weekends when my husband is home to hold her, usually her BS 7hrs post injection is around 23. We are quite happy with how she is at the moment, just thought of the homeopathic remedies today as maybe something else to try. She is elderly, very thin and she isn't going through any more stress than absolutely necessary :-)

You would think a dry food designed for diabetics would be ok, but it is about 16-18% carb. Granted it's better than most dry that runs 25-40% carb but Ideally diabetic cats should eat food less than 10 % carb. So yeah, it does make a difference. If your cat likes the wet if would just fed as much of it as she will eat.... Just no food two hours before preshot testing.

In addition to wet I feed a dry that is 1% carb (young again zero) and another that is 8% (evo) but I don't think they are available by you. Can you get Orijien or Evo by you?

I'm sure this may not be a popular opinion, but homeopathic "remedies" are a waste of money--they're either ineffective (because they're diluted to where you can't even detect molecules of the supposedly-therapeutic substance) or dangerous (because they are poorly regulated, can be alcohol-based, can contain heavy metals, etc.). Homeopathic "medicines" are not the same as herbal or vitamin supplements--which unfortunately can also be dangerous (just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's safe). But at least when you buy supplements, you're actually getting something. There's evidence for some holistic/alternative medicine, but homeopathy is a ripoff. Dietary changes are much more likely to be helpful! [Editing to add an overview--there are many more to be found: https://nccih.nih.gov/health/homeopathy#hed4]

Tagging @Bronx's dad
Paul might have some input on the subject of homeopathic remedies and supplements.

Yes, I have tried a few things that have worked and some I am still trying.

Bronx has acromegaly and I am trying ellagic acid (raspberry seed powder) to fight the tumor. Jury is still out if it is working and I'll probably never know since he also recently had radiation for the tumor. As far as herbal supplementation, Bronx is now off off all pain meds for his joint pain and arthritis from the acromegaly bony growth. I switched to natural remedies like fish oil (from cold water wild caught fish) & "golden paste" (organic turmeric based) and is walking better than he ever did from the meds or from glucosamine. He also takes a small amount of spirulina (seaweed) for overall health. Also trying to get him off Lactulose and Miralax for his constipation with natural remedies.

My last cat had bladder stones that required surgery to remove but her heart was not strong enough to put her under so I needed another option. I found a holistic source who had a concoction of herbs in powder form and we used it for a few months. Went back for an x-ray about 4 months later and the stones were all gone! Vet said he had never seen that happen for that type of stone.

My last cat had kidney stones that required surgery to remove but her heart was not strong enough to put her under so I needed another option. What is the raspberry powder supposed to do? Keep the tumor from growing or reduce the tumor?
Would you share more information about what you used for the stones, please?
My cat's BFF civvies has stones and I've asked the vet about surgery or other options and was told there was no surgery to remove stones and no remedies. His stones are so painful. He takes zeniquin for the analgesic side effects, and I'd rather he had something else to improve his health.
Thank you.

I am trying to find any info I have but it was over 10yrs ago and threw away all her paperwork after she passed. And looking at my old bookmarks trying to find it, I realized it was bladder stones and not kidney stones. I think this is it, she hated the taste, had to mix with water in a syringe and shoot it down her mouth: https://www.pawhealer.com/127/bladder-stone-for-cat.aspx

As far as the ellagic acid, this is why I am trying it: http://www.thedogplace.org/HEALTH/Cancer-phytochemicals-ellagic-acid_Dr.Vargas-0611.asp
