How to graze feed wet food?

Our Zeke is being a turd about his food and we are having a time getting him to eat what he needs. I am considering graze feeding with the wet food but not sure how we would do that with his diabetes and how that would also affect his shots.

Hi Meredith,
I can't offer much help, but I'm in a very similar boat.
My Fabby used to weight 18 lbs, but is down to 12 because of the diabetes.
I feed her Friskies patès 4x a day and try to get a half can in her each feeding. Even that is difficult and involves various tricks and hoops for me the human...
She hasn't been a free-feeder/grazer in several years, so I'm trying hard not to go back there as I have other kitties on a different diet (prescription) which means she would need to be on constant quarantine.
I've been considering getting a sample of that zero carb dry food (Young again, or something like that) to supplement as I've read it's very nutrient dense.

But I also want her to get better stabilized with her diabetes. When her weight comes back, well it's one of my measures of progress. So I'm just giving her time as long as she continues to get almost 2 cans a day (as that's the quantity to maintain her current weight). So far we've been able to stop the weight loss. If you want my time consuming tips for getting Fabby to eat more, let me know... but I'm hoping someone comes along with better advice than mine!

Hi AlphaCat,
I wish I could say that we are getting 2 cans down Zeke each day, unfortunately not. He was eating 2 1/2 cans of FF twice a day, then the vet said increase his insulin and his food since he was still losing weight, and at that point he stopped eating as much. I have even tried cutting his insulin dose back to the amount of when he was eating 2 1/2 cans and nothing. We have switched to the Friskies because he was always wanting to eat the other 2 kitties food so figured he might eat better, nope. :( I would say he is getting just over 1 can a day right now. I know that isn't near enough so watching him closely while we are fighting through this stage. He isn't regulated yet so don't want to do something that will make it harder to regulate also.

I picked up Fancy Feast one ingredient treats (the Salmon ones) because they are individually wrapped to give Fabby when I test her glucose. She goes nuts for them. Drooling while waiting for me to unzip the glucose meter.
She loves food in general. She's a big gal in general at a regular and healthy 18 pounds. So it's hard for her to resist the clinking of the spoon against her food dish. After she's eaten what she wants I've found if I stir her food into a pile again she will eat some more (not a lot). I also noticed her pushing the food around was her mostly just licking off the juice of the food. Since it's Pate, there's not much to begin with, so if the spoon clinking/mountain making doesn't work, I add a bit of water and stir it around to make it juicer for her. That usually does the trick. But if she doesn't go for that for very long I will break out a Salmon treat and break it up into little chunks and stir it around (making sure there are still some chunks on top so she smells it good).

That has worked for me so far... even though I'd like to get a whole other can added daily. I have noticed she will eat more if her glucose is higher, it's harder to get her to eat when her glucose is lower. (And we haven't even made it into "ideal" numbers yet...)

But to answer your question about free feeding wet food from what I've read in here: As long as you are picking up all food 2 hours before your AMPS and PMPS (and likely any days you do a curve). Then you can leave the food down all you want. If you feed 2 hours before you check glucose it can cause the food to boost the glucose number falsely, which could lead to giving too much insulin and causing hypoglycemia once the food glucose wears off and kitty goes into nadir.
Also, I don't know if Novolin N is like Vetsulin (I do see they are lumped together on the same insulin board here) but I have to feed and then wait a bit to let the food digest before giving insulin. So you would need the 2 hours of fasting so Zeke will eat for you so you can give insulin... (if it's like Vetsulin anyway...)

It's okay to leave wet food down/out... for a while. But you aren't supposed to leave dry food that you added liquid to to make wet as that gets moldy... but regular wet food from a can doesn't. I don't quite remember where I read that on these boards.

Were there other questions/concerns about leaving out wet food?

I suppose my biggest concern about wet food grazing would be - unless quarantined (in a multi-cat household) I'd never be able to really tell how much she was actually eating.

Time for me to poke my cat... :) good luck on the food! I'm there with you!

Wonder if it would just be easier to do a third feeding first and see how he does with that? Though with food causing bg to rise, would I need to adjust morning dose or stay the same? I know the vet wants a mid-day snack since his peak was 69 yesterday so would I just do a small meal instead? I know my other 2 would enjoy a third meal lol

I do 4 meals without adjusting insulin. Two meals are right before insulin and the other two meals are at nadir. If you wanted to add one meal for a total of 3. Keep the insulin the same, just add the 3rd meal at +5 or +6 after morning insulin (whenever insulin is at its lowest after your morning dose). I do morning meal, then insulin at 8am and then retest at 2pm and feed the days 2nd meal. 3rd meal and another insulin at 8pm. (I do a 4th meal at 1am, but if your kitty gets enough food with 3 meals, you're doing better than I am!)

Yeah, if we do adjust meals, it would be to add a third, no way could I do one in the middle of the night. I have to take meds to help me sleep, otherwise I barely get any at all and like a zombie the rest of the time. Not good for keeping a close eye on Zeke. Thinking doing a small meal at about +5 in the afternoon. Like maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a can. But tonight he definitely did much better! Actually had 124 for his pmps! He also ate a good can worth after he helped himself to some of what his little brother left lol.
