Things pretty much seem to be in order here...but I actually think Trix may have idiopathic cystitis. We had a couple "butt over the edge of the box" pees yesterday (about 12 hours apart), and she seemed to have some post-pee discomfort again (ie, taking a few steps after peeing and then sitting down for a few before moving on). I think this could be why we had a crappy appy the other day as well as why we have the higher numbers, too. The reason I think it's idiopathic is because she has been on an AB for the last 3 weeks which should, in theory, take care of any infection (unless there's resistance now), and because she does seem to be feeling better today - if it was an infection, I think she'd be feeling crappy/crappier. Unfortunately we are caught between a rock and a hard place. Because she's on the AB, any testing (urinalysis and culture) would not give us accurate results; she needs to be off the AB for 7-10 days before we can get an accurate test. And, we might as well finish this course, just in case there really is/was an infection - we have one week to go. In hindsight, of course, I am kicking myself for not doing the C&S back when we had her in the ER 3 weeks ago...and now I'm wondering/thinking if this has been idiopathic all along. Stress brings this out, and it all started within a couple weeks of letting sweet civvie Petey go. Yesterday I read that most cases of urinary issues are actually idiopathic rather than infection. Ugh.

However, as I said, she does seem to be feeling better today....no "butt over the edge" incidents so far, and when she exits the box she keeps moving rather than stopping after a few steps. Appy has been good for the last couple days.

DH and I are taking our Moms out for Mother's Day lunch today (DH's Dad passed away 7 years ago). Unfortunately the weather is really icky so no enjoying being outside, but it should be a nice meal.

Prayers to all....

Amy

I'm glad Miss Trix seems to be feeling better. She's very lucky to have you as her bean Amy but really wish things were easier for you. Sorry about the crappy NJ weather but hope you enjoy brunch regardless. Always vines and prayers for you and your babies. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I had to look up the word idiopathic our fur babies are just like humans with regards to the illnesses they get. That darn STRESS has away of creeping in when you least expect it. I know it really affects Fritz... Sure hope the infection clears up once and for all.
Hope you have a wonderful lunch with the mom's!!!!!

I'm glad Trixie is doing better today. I hope everything clears up soon. I hope you have a great lunch. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Happy to hear that Trixie is feeling a bit better today and nice that the BG is green!
Hope you and DH have a nice lunch with your moms!

Hey Amy, you could be on to something with the idiopathic as Dr. Lisa says most of them are stress induced and not infection caused and recommends culture to be done before just assuming it's an infection.

Many here use the D Mannose for cystitis and hopefully some will weigh in, I am tagging @jayla-n-Drevon as I believe she has had experience with it and can help you.

I think this makes sense. My vets have always done a C&S when they suspect an infection.

I'm glad Trix seems to be feeling better today. Sending some healing and appy vines to help her keep improving.

The lack of C&S is really more my fault than the vet's. When Trix was first peeing outside the box 3 weeks ago, we had to take her to the ER because our regular vet was closed for the evening. The ER doc basically said they "could" do a C&S and bloodwork if we wanted, but she also didn't object with starting ABs and having us get in touch with our regular vet in the morning - so she really didn't push doing labs. By that point, we'd already been there at the ER for several hours, and labs would have added another hour plus the drive home...I'd had enough and couldn't stand having Trix in the carrier any longer, so we took the ABs and got in touch with our vet in the morning. In my fuzzy-headed stressed out condition, I wasn't thinking that even one dose of an AB would screw up a C&S...I thought we'd just run Trix to the regular vet the next morning for the labs....but it was too late because we started the AB the night before. I should have known better, but I was just to overwhelmed with everything from the last few months to be thinking straight.

I will look into D Mannose - thanks, Bobbie!

Unfortunately she did have a "butt over the edge" pee while we were out to lunch - but at the same time she seems to be feeling really, really good. Appy is strong, demeanor is great, etc. Right now I'd say she's at about an 85% success rate of getting her tush all the way in the box....

Hi Amy
I use d mannose when Dre is running high for prevention of infection. We also used it regularly at the rescue I helped with as many cats are so stresssd but often no Bacteria showed on culture. I can't explain why it helped but it did.
We even took them off to see if we were crazy but the behavior was clearly worse when not taking it.
My vet also likes cranberry comfort for both infection or unknown cause.
I am personally not a fan of cranberry when infection is present. But if inflammation of unknown origin I have heard good reports.
Prayers ....
