Vet visit, Taffy was good boy and calm. For just under $300, I got my insulin Rx refilled...
Well, I did get a blood chem panel and urinalysis, but man, those are pricey! $170 & $72, respectively. No results today, as it is all sent out to IDEXX. I thought they would do an in-house BG, which I was interested to compare, but they said their machine was out for service or something. I don't think the young woman vet is very experienced with diabetes management, but I listened to her. She wants me to try the DM food, seems to think that cat needs the "simple carbs" to help regulate blood sugar. I said "no, thanks" to dry, but took the two free cans of wet she gave me. She didn't say so, but I could tell she wasn't pro raw. Did anyone think this DM food is as magical as vets seem to think?

Be sure it says just DM and not DM 'Select' (in black box below DM). The DM is fairly low carb, the DM Select has gravy driving the carbs way up too high for a diabetic cat. She's right about the simple carbs - cats use them much better.

HUGS!

No comment on the DM food, don't know anything about it. Hopefully someone else will weigh in.
So many vets are against the option of raw food. I actually left my old vet's practice because they were so closed minded about it.
Hope all of Taffy's gets all A's on his tests!

But I thought the goal was low or no carbs???

Yes, I don't really care what the vet thinks about my feeding raw or any other suggestions from her on FD. I gave up long ago on finding a vet in my area that is holistic or alternative or common sense-minded. I just decided to go to the nearest place to get Taffy's Rx refilled and get bloodwork, because of Taffy's fear of car rides. I can figure out the rest myself. (Well, and with this community's help!) I really would not mind at all paying the high costs of vet care if I had a vet that I actually could work with and respect opinions, but I just "use them" for labs and Rx's. I tried getting some input on Taffy's health history and FD and just got a blank stare.

Depressing! Good thing we have each other here. Did Taffy just throw up a little bit or is something going on with him?
He got the rest of Baby's breakfast kibbles while I was rushing around trying to get ready to go to vet. He threw these up on the car ride home from vet. He typically gets car sick/car stressed. He was fine after that and fine now. Normal appy at dinner. Just gave a snack since his +2 was headed down.

Yeah, I saw his nice PMPS and that he went lower at +2. Hope he has a nice surf tonight. Glad he it was just a combo kibble/car ride thatgot to him and that he's feeling better!

I'm glad the vetty visit went well and you got the Lantus prescription. I hope you get good test results back. Poor Taffy vomiting in the car. I had a cat that did that every time I took him to the vet. It took me a while to figure out he got car sick.

Julie, how many refills did you get on your script? Did you get the vet to write the script "PRN" so you don't have to keep going back for more scripts?

As for DM, read the ingredients. Most of the Rx foods are not made with quality ingredients. If you're feeding raw, you know what you're giving your cat. As for simple carbs, cats are obligate carnivores. Their bodies can't process carbs regardless of what kind they are. The only way felines process carbs is if they are already semi-digested and in the GI track of their prey.

@Ozzy Pawzbourne - Just an FYI, most prescriptions are only good for a year. At least for humans (and this varies by state), you can't write a refill "as needed." There has to be a finite number of times an Rx can be refilled.

That's how my vet wrote my lantus script for Ozzy - "PRN" which means "as needed". We havent' gotten to the 1 year mark yet so we will see. We are currently stocking up on the $10 lantus pens that Julie told us about. I have one full one already stocked in the back of the fridge and should be picking up another one in a week or so. By the time the year-long lantus coupon card runs out, I should have at least 6 pens stocked away which will last a long time if they don't expire. If we run into a situation, we will donate them.

PRN(as needed) just indicates how frequently you should take the med, same as QD, TID or BID (once, twice or three times daily). Silly doctors and their latin.

The script itself does have an expiration date though as well as a max number of refills. In my neck of the woods, like Sienne mentioned it is one year from the date on the script. The date starts when the doc writes the script, not when you first take it to a pharmacy.

My main problem was that I was switching vets due to first Dx vet leaving area. New vet needed to "see" Taffy to give Rx. I get it. Now that we have been seen, I think she would refill by phone without recheck.

I know this, and I can't for the life of me understand why vets don't know this. But I took the free cans she gave and even offered it to Taffy and he would not touch it. So that settles that!

The reason that vets are clueless is because if they get 15 min of training in nutrition while they're in school, it's a lot. (It's true for MDs as well.) The vets get their "information" from the salespeople who come by to sell them prescription food and the prescription food has enough of a mark-up that it's a source of income for the practice. I know when I had this discussion with a former vet, when I pointed out that I could buy a brand of cat food like Wellness that had higher quality ingredients and was lower in carbs than the Rx stuff. It was like a lightbulb went off in her head -- and she told me to bring all of the Rx stuff back.
