Hello!
I'm thinking about changing Gizzy's food from Purina DM to Young Again. If I do this, how would I handle the change as far as dosing goes?
Thanks!
Steph

Any reason you are moving to a dry food diet?

If he will eat wet a LC wet diet is a better choice from a health point of view. Cats have a poor thirst reflex a dry food diet will usually leave cats habitually dehydrated, this puts unne pressure on its kidneys, which, in a diabetic cat are already under a lot of stress.

To answer your question on how to make the change, slowly is the best approach. Mix in the us and wet gradually I creasing proportions of ya.

I see you follow TR, it is a prerequisite of TR that kitty be on a wet LC diet, so moving to a an all ya dry diet would not be advisable if you would like to stick to TR.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought dry was bad because it had more carbs not for lack of mousture. I haven't bought any, just considering. Someone is sending me samples. She said I could free feed it to all my cats and it would def simplify for me. But if it's not recommended I won't change.

Oh, the reason I'm considering is that his numbers are still all over the map. I'm at a loss at this point as to what to do.

Here's a post by Dr Lisa regarding food, makes for an interesting read.

I guess if you are feeding regular dry food to your other cats and you have some that are dry food addicts, and your concern is that Gizzy will get into the contraband, having the others on young again would at least mean that it wont affect his BG adversely if he got into it.

That said, if you can I might consider swapping them all onto a wet LC diet Dr Lisa has a site that talks about feline nutrition and discusses the benefits of a species appropriate diet. Again another interesting read

He's numbers don't look bad, he's seeing a lot of green, though he does seem to bounce up when he hits green.

A couple of things that stand out to me when I look at the numbers,
1) I see two drops below 50, and you didn't take a reduction, how long has he been diabetic?
2) He drops hard and fast, and on both those days when he dropped to 48, I am suspicious that he might have dropped further, and the 48 was him on his way up.

Some Questions
1)How are you feeding Gizzy at the moment?
2)What's his feeding schedule?
3)Remind me what the carb content of the wet food he is getting is.
4) Is he getting into the civies dry food?(contraband)

You may want to think of trying to slow down those fast drops, as those hard and fast drops may well be responsible for the bounces that follow.
Here are a couple of really interesting posts that talk about feeding the curve and bouncing and some strategies that you can try which can help to flatten out those curves
