She ate maybe a teaspoon total of HC food and then LC food with Karo syrup.
Will test again in 20-30 minutes. Vet is very close by.

Well I alarmed her and then I broke the cardinal rule: DO NOT CHASE. I'm not sure when I can test her again. She ran up and down the stairs 3 times with ease. I guess the stress will elevate her BG for a while. I should not have chased her. Darn.

I would put 1t HC with gravy and a drop of Karo in her bowl, leave her be for 20 mins or so and see if she eats it. If/when she does, give it about 20 mins and see if you can test.

How is she behaving?

I gave her sardines as a treat but didn't grab her, in order to reestablish trust. Then she free fed on some other LC food after the sardines (ignoring the HC and LC mixed with Karo). She was behaving normally, but stayed just out of reach. I let her outside to reestablish more trust. And just now when I politely and calmly asked her for another test she reported to our test station. AMPS+7=186. She will train me eventually...
53 to 186 in 2 hours. I guess the food and syrup helped or maybe it's a bounce. I think we're through with lows for now.
So, I should do another reduction, this PM, so soon? An alphatrak 186 is above normal.

Yes. A reduction is in order. It looks like the 186 was stress-induced from the chase. She is back down to 85 at AMPS+9. I gave her some fresh LC, as she was hungry.
I hope she is above 85 at PMPS, or I might be afraid to give her insulin.

I had 3 failed test strips for this last test. A good 20% to 30% of the strips in this batch are duds. I had to poke her twice because of the strips. I think they are giving me good numbers, when they work. The numbers all make sense in context. I will phone alphatrak. I could open another vial.

AlphaTrak will give me a new vial of test strips through my vet. They will pick up failed strips for their investigation. They say the numbers should be correct if the strips don't give an error. Also, I remembered, they gave the right number for the test solution.
Now I just have to ponder what to do for her evening shot.

That's very good to hear that they have good customer service like that-- those strips are too expensive to go through them like that!

It was likely the karo wearing off - it brings numbers up quickly but the effects dont last long. That's why under circumstances like today continuing to test until you have 2 consecutive numbers over 50 (human meter) that are not influenced by food is strongly recommended.

4u is a substantial dose. A skipped shot is sometimes needed to drain a a large depot a bit (I skipped many a shot back in the day, for that very reason) . Thinking of it as a fur shot eases the mind ;)

I'm glad you called them and reported the bad strips. One needs to have confidence that strips and meter are working as expected, especially under circumstances like today. Have you considered getting a back up meter? It is something one doesn't think about until the need arises (like when my BK decided to hide his on me....)
Keep in mind if you ever have doubts about a meter result, you can always test yourself for comparison.

What time do you shoot and what timezone are you in?

I did get a backup meter, after seeing it recommended here.
So, you believe I should be thinking about skipping a shot and not just reducing to 4u? Then there's the whole range in between, like 2u.
I will try to get a few more tests in before shot time.

I am in the central time zone. She had her morning shot at 6:10 AM. So I have 2 hours to think about this.
I just got an 84 at AMPS+10.
The directions say large doses may need to be reduced by 0.5u, but large doses are not defined.
I have picked up her food, so her PMPS will not be food influenced.

in general we think of a high dose kitty as one that is getting anything north of 6u. I'm not certain if that is the guideline for considering whether a .5u reduction is called for. No worries- someone around here will know

I think she tends to go up at night in reaction to daytime lows. Unless I am just ignoring the possibility of late night super lows.
If I assume she will rise, I should shoot.

I would do 4.0 units as her next dose. We do changes by 0.5 units at a time when they are over a 5.0 unit dose.

Glad you wrote that because that's what I just shot!!! Thanks!
My vet was suggesting 2u in a casual email, but, while that seems logical, that is not the TR protocol---which has such a good track record.
