If it were my kitty I would hold the dose for three drops below 68 on the AT2 meter. Fearless is struggling to keep consistent numbers. Example on 4/29 that is the only cycle he dropped below 68 on dose 1.25 u. Now if Fearless has a cycle that you are having a hard time keeping the numbers rising then he earned a reduction.
It sure would be nice to see how low he went last night. Although in the pinks I do see a flat cat that you might see some good movement this cycle or tonight.

Yep !!!!! you can control the big drops by giving some food. Fearless look at you w

orking that juice! regular food not MC or HC you want his numbers to continue down

DebG, I see the logic in what you are saying (about holding the dose for three drops), but I have been trying to follow the TR protocol to the letter. Does anyone else feel as DebG does?

Plus, Fearless was high for so long that even numbers in the 90s (on 4/26) or even the 100s (on 4/28) appear to trigger a bounce (both on 1.25U).

I've recently had pretty good success tweaking amt of LC food (see 4/29). If I had followed my instinct and fed that 75 @ +6 we might not be having this discussion now because he might not have dropped to 66.

I don't recall seeing these guidelines http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...-and-starting-otj-trials.150160/#post-1953148
anywhere but they appear to offer more flexibility in taking reductions. With Fearless's history of bouncing off lows and not holding reductions well (see 4/20 reduction from 1.5 to 1.25U), I guess I should have waited until he was <68 (on pet meter) twice more on 1.25U before reducing the dose to 1U. I was questioning the reduction; now I know why.

... and now he's bounced again. Rats!
It's ok his little body is not use to the low numbers it is a natural reaction and some kitties bounce more than others. Some times the longer and more often they get into the lower numbers the body starts to say I'm ok with the lower numbers and that is when if Fearless little pancreas is going to heal it is those lower numbers. and less bouncing.

  • If an attempted reduction fails, go right back up to the last good dose as soon as you see kitty's numbers trending upwards. You don't have to hold the reduced dose for a certain number of cycles before taking the dose right back up. The guidelines listed under the topic "Increasing the dose" donot apply to a failed reduction. Please use common sense in this situation. The "last good dose" is not the dose that just dropped kitty into the 20s or 30s. You want to resume momentum by finding a dose in-between the dose that dropped kitty too low and the reduced dose. I think Fearless needs more insulin.
  • Lets see if some others have some in put.

The trick is telling the difference between a bounce and a failed reduction. Bounces can last up to six cycles, although a few kitties have been known to drag them out a little longer. But generally, if his numbers stay high after six cycles, you can call it a failed reduction.

Sorry, I have been in bed w/a migraine and wasn't checking the board. Not sure what that 599 was about but now he is down to 320. With these ups and downs it's probably a bounce (and not a failed reduction), right? So do you all think I should go back to 1.25U tomorrow?

I'm thinking it might be a bounce. He could have been clearing the bounce from the greens on 4/29, then he hit 137 (or lower) today and that may have set off another bounce. I'd hold the dose for now.

Sending healing vines for that migraine. I know how miserable they can be.

I can attest to how tricky it is to differentiate between bouncing and a dose that's too low, almost impossible sometimes. I've left Teasel many cycles at a Lantus dose that looked very much like it was too low only to have him surprise me with a drop way down the line - eg. Mar 19 to Mar 23 on his SS. I can't often follow the TR guideline of 6 cycles then increase if there aren't good numbers. He's fully capable of bouncing longer than 6 cycles too.
