Ham is not eating again. Called the vet made an appointment for this afternoon. Received a call back saying there is no need to bring him in, just give him his insulin and that should trigger him to eat.

I said last time this happened Ham had DKA they said you can keep your appointment if you'd like. I was like yes I want to keep my appointment. He wasn't eating Saturday and hardly ate last night.

I'm really no beginning to think my vet has no clue what so ever.

You might want to find a new vet. It angers me to see them say that!!!!!!
Wonder if he has an infection? Does he have any other symptoms ? Any other changes in Ham?
Sending vines and prayers please let us know what they find. Keep being persistent and have a loud voice for Ham !!!!
There is something wrong cats don't stop eating for no reason!!!!!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm sorry Ham isn't eating, and that your vet seems clueless on top of that. I can't really say I've heard that "insulin will trigger" eating before. With his DKA history, food is essential. Does your current vet have any sort of ideas as to why Ham isn't eating? Recent bloodwork, etc? Is there another vet in your area that you can go see? With Ham's history, I would insist that he be seen by someone....even if it's a new vet.

He threw up a couple of times on Saturday. And he seems kinda mopeing around and in the closet a lot maybe cuz it's dark in there. Some days I really wish I could just talk to him.

I want to echo what Amy said: you need to find a new vet as soon as possible.

Is Ham holding any food down at all? I don't mean to scare you, but if cats don't get enough calories, they can get something called hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, and it can be fatal. I know because I lost a cat to it. He wasn't eating well and I didn't realize how serious that was. I took him to the vet finally, but it was too late to save him. I tell you this so you'll understand what I didn't - a cat that is not eating, especially a cat that has had DKA, needs to go to a vet to find out what is wrong.

Does he seem interested in food? Does he sniff it and walk away, maybe licking his lips? These are signs of nausea. When was his last bloodwork? His numbers aren't bad, but it still isn't a bad idea to check for ketones. The recipe for ketones is not enough insulin + not enough calories + infection.

Here are some tips to see if you can tempt him to eat: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/suggestions-on-how-to-stimulate-kittys-appetite.130770/ I cannot stress enough how important this is. Please don't make the mistake I did.

The vet visit went ok... says he teeth are hurting him and one has to be pulled... which angered me since Ham was there in march to have his tooth pulled but the vet didn't do it said all it needed was cleaned. So Ham is going back tomorrow to have it pulled then I think that's the last time he's seeing that vet!

I would absolutely start looking for a vet ASAP.

So he didn't say anything else about Ham's not eating? Did he check for dehydration? When cats don't eat, they can get dehydrated quickly.

Have you tried offering Ham some chicken baby food? It's fine for diabetics and most cats love it. If his teeth are the reason he isn't eating, he should have no problems with that. It's not ideal for long term, but you need to get some calories into him, and it's fine for a day or two.

If you do find a new vet, be sure to get a copy of Ham's records from this one to give your new vet. If you feel they won't give them to you, the new vet can request them.

When Ham doesn't eat I force feed him. I know how important it is for him to get food. He has eaten since we've been home from the vet. I will get copies tomorrow when I drop Ham off for the extraction.

Thanks had I not been persistent about the vet seeing Ham today he would not be going in in the morning to get his tooth pulled! It's so frustrating when vets do that I know my cat and if I say something is wrong and want to bring him in the don't question me just see him and take my money! Could you imagine if people doctors were like that "hi yes I coughed up my lung" "oh ok no reason to come in just take some cough medicine" when you actually have bronchitis.

Most importantly little Ham is going to be taken care of!!!!! We know our fur babies.....:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that. My brain aneurism (dramatic music here) was first diagnosed as a sinus infection, then a pulled facial muscle. I'm not making that up. Last year I crashed in the shower and had my 20th concussion so we zoomed to the hospital that had my neurological records. She tapped my knee with the little hammer, nothing else. Another hospital because now my back hurt, nothing. Finally saw my family doctor, a woman (because men don't listen) who sent me for a simple X-ray. 3 cracked vertebrae! It was 39 days before I slept an entire night. They're too arrogant to admit a mistake. I got kicked out of an emergency room once because I asked the "doctor" to repeat what he just mumbled about emergency surgery. Turns out that would have made everything worse.
