Wow! I'm happy to see his blood sugar this low, but not sure if I should inject his insulin at all tonight?? I'm thinking not ?? Thx for input

I would wait WITHOUT FEEDING and retest in 20 minutes. With using a pet meter the 102 may be too low to shoot even for TR since you don;t have a lot of mid cycle tests in the last few days

ETA Reduction level with TR using a pet meter is less than 68...not less than 50...50 is for a human meter

This link has information on lower than usual preshot numbers:

CORRECTION THAT WAS THE WRONG LINK I WILL TRY TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE

Remember though that a pet meter uses a higher cut off number and reduction number with TR. It is suggested that you have some good data as to how low a dose is taking your kitty before you attempt to shoot lower numbers.

Thank you. Yes.... some days I am unable to get midday readings due to work. My schedule is flexible on some days and those are the days I will get mid cycle readings

Thank you!! I really appreciate the help and support!!

The main thing you need to be concerned with is keeping your kitty safe as well as treating the diabetes. Shooting lower numbers can be useful in controlling glucose levels but you also want to have some good data. With the 102 preshot you don't know if your kitty dropped lower during the cycle and is on the way back up, or if your kitty is still dropping. That is why you stall without feeding and do a retest. However even if Baxter is on the rise, you don't have a lot of mid cycle data lately to know how low that dose is taking him.

Once you get a retest done you can post the number here. What or if you shoot will depend on what reading you get, as long as he hasn't eaten since the preshot test and whether you are able to stay up and monitor if necessary.

Also, it would be a good idea to add that you are using a pet meter to your signature so that it is clear to everyone.

Just retested now and it is 146 an hour later. He had a little food already too

When you are stalling to see if a number is rising there should be no food given since food will affect the readings. With having food on board the second reading may or may not indicate that Baxter is on the rise. If you continue holding off on giving insulin, this will affect your normal shooting schedule. Will this cause problems with giving shots if you have to move it forward several hours?

I understand. He had already eaten when I saw your post to not feed. I'm not sure what to do?? Is it OK if I don't inject until tomorrow morning when I usually would inject about 6:30 AM ??

Has Baxter had any health problems such as ketones or the such? If so then you should not skip a shot. I hate to suggest skipping a shot, but if shooting any later will mess up your shooting schedule then that may be the way to go. His numbers will be high in the morning though. It would be very helpful if there was some way to get tests around +4-+6 after the shot to get a better idea of how low this dose is taking him.

ETA The problem is that if Baxter is dropping a lot lower during mid cycle it may require a dose adjustment, but without those readings it is hard to say how low he may be getting. TR is an aggressive protocol and it is good to know what the nadir (lowest number) is when making dosing decisions.

Thanks so much for all your help. Great advice. I will do my best to test more +6's and such

No ketones or health problems

don't sweat it that you are skipping. It's not really any different than giving a fur shot.
They happen.
You can stay on your schedule and next time you'll be more prepared....
It's a continuous learning process......

It is now several hours after the usual shot time. If changing your shot times by this time amount will mess up your shot timing then it is best to skip the shot and continue with your regular schedule. If you need to adjust the time for tomorrow you can pick any time that suits you since you didn't shoot tonight. Getting the midcycle test...if possible...will give a better idea how well Baxter is responding to the current dose. Your AMPS will be higher because of the skipped shot, so you will want to hold the old dose for 3 days (count starts over on TR with a skipped shot) unless the numbers drops too low.

Just tested again.... 172

Thx again. This certainly is a learning process , but now I will certainly know how to handle lower numbers.

And thank you everyone SO much! This forum is wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to care about my Baxter. He means the world to me and I know you all feel that way about your fur babies as well. What a great site this is. Special thx to you Tuxedo Mom.
