Sandi & Chase in AZ

Member Since 2017
Hello to all of my wonderful friends out there is FD land. I've missed you, and I'm glad to be checking in. I didn't mean to abandon the site, especially after the OTJ party. But I've had some personal health issues and just have not been getting online much at all. I'm happy to report that Chase is still in remission and is doing well, although I haven't figured out how to get his scratching under control. He used to get cortisone shots every once in a great while, when this stuff just refused to calm down. But since that is no longer an option, the poor guy has just been all scabbed up under his neck and chest from scratching so much. I try the topical solutions (hot spot spray and skin moisturizer) but he licks off every single bit of it, so it does no good. Other than that, though, he's doing pretty good for being an old guy. As for me, I'm still trying to figure out how to get my chronic back pain under control. I'm going to ask my doc to send me to a pain mgmt clinic, as pain meds do nothing positive for me, anymore.

I hope to check in and see everyone. I haven't kept Chase's spreadsheet up to date but I do have all the data. I have a lot of catching up to do this weekend with that.

I hope that everyone is well and that kitties continue to recover. Hugs to all. :)

Nice to read your message, Sandi. I'm glad Chase is doing well aside from the itchiness. Does he have a food allergy?
Sorry about your back pain and hope you can get connected with a pain management clinic.

Hi Kris. Yes... he does have allergies, but I have been feeding him only food that doesn't contain what his tests indicate he is allergic to. However, you never really know, for sure, what's in the commercially made food. I think I am finally going to take the next best step for Chase, and that is to try and feed raw. I've been a little afraid to do it but I can't stand to see him itch and scratch all the time. I think I just needed a break after those harrowing 3 months. I was testing twice a day, but am only testing once every few days, now. He's still below 100 and that is such a wonderful thing. I'm afraid I've become a bit lax with his feeding, though. I had a bad experience with the feeder (I had some gnats that were getting onto the food) and so I wasn't spreading his a.m. meals out because I had to go to work. I think I shall start using it again, though, as I think I finally got rid of the gnats. I don't want to get so lax that he comes out of remission. I'm so grateful that is off of insulin and that his pancreas is doing better. :)

As someone with a herniated disc, I had back problems for years before I was told about nerve ablation. It worked great!

I’m glad your cat is still in remission!
Hi Mandy. I don't have herniated discs but I do have what is called facet joint arthrosis, and it was bad 10 years ago. I'm afraid to see what the x-rays will show, now. I also have spinal stenosis in the neck and problems in the C5/C6 area. I haven't had x-rays for years. I haven't really been able to afford to take really good care of myself. But I just can't deal with pain medication anymore and it's time to do something else. Never ablation.... hmmmmm... sounds a little scary. :nailbiting:

I don't know if you qualify because of the different issues. They burn off the nerves that cause me pain. They do grow back so it's not permanent.

So good to hear Chase is still in remission. Sorry about your back problems. There is nothing worse than chronic pain. It wears on every fiber of your being (bean :)).

There is a post in the Think Tank about neosporium for the ears and in that @Jill & Alex (GA) recommended Cloud Nine Herbal Healing Salve as an alternative. Well, Gizmo's ears were bothering him even using the neo w/ pain relief so I decided to try this stuff - in less than a week he is not shrinking from touch to the ears and he is not shaking his head. I honestly didn't expect it to work any better, but it does. It is truly fantastic (as Jill says).

I ordered it through Amazon - but their "where to buy" shows Chewy and at Petco (among others).

http://shop.halopets.com/Products/Herbal-Healing-Salve

Helps support healing for cuts, wounds, abrasions, and scabby areas within days. Also helps soothe hot spots.
Ingredients: Vegetable Oils (Soy Oil, Almond Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil), Beeswax, Squalene, Carnuba (Palm) Wax, Vitamin A (Beta-carotene)-5,000 iu, Vitamin D - 600 iu, Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol) - 5,000 iu, Calendula (Marigold), Aloe, Comfrey, Tea Tree Oil, Myrrh Gum Oil, Lavender Oil.

As for licking it off, maybe a shirt for a few days to see if you can get it under control? I hear Lyresa aka @Squeaky and KT (GA) has great knowledge on those

Thank you SO much! I've never heard of a shirt for a cat. You mean that Lyresa can tell me about using a shirt on Chase?

Good to hear from you and so sorry to hear about your back and Chase's itchiness! Have you considered trying raw food? It is suppose to help with allergies. Also, when my dog and civvie Forrest have skin issues, scratching ( dog sometimes gets hot spot) I use aloe vera gel with lidocaine on it and it stops it in it's tracks. It's the kind you use on sunburn for relief. I get the CVS brand. Just a little dab on it and it soothes it and stops the itching and heals immediately.
