Jacqui, me again! I forgot to answer one of your questions about switching foods. If you have recently reduced the carbs to lower carb, that can cause kitties to drop in numbers. Some kitties have drop over 100 points in a day from just switching to lower carb food . I am so glad you are testing as it is important during this process of reducing carbs. So , keep up the good work!

This website keeps giving and giving! Thanks for showing me this, I have no clue what I'd be doing without the info here. With the ketones, I've been recording them in the mmol/l version of the spreadsheet, but they're not coming across onto the mg/dl version. I'll add them across manually, but it might take a minute.

Update: Okay, I can't figure out to add them manually... I think I have to ask someone who also uses the 'world' version.
I use the world version (I'm in Canada) and I just put "neg. K" in a cell on my SS when I do a test. If it was anything other than negative, I'd make a note in the remarks section as well as colour code it more brightly in the SS cell.

This is the BEST place to be for advice and support. People will "sit" with you when you're dealing with low numbers, give advice and cheer you on. It's very heartening to have someone "close by" when the excitement hits! :)

Three cheers for @Tanya and Ducia for being such a great coach for Jacqui and Dave!!
Thank you Kris!
To draw a lesson from this: it was wrong to tell Jacqui to feed at after the last test, +8 or +9, wasn't it?
The number was good, the late dips are not for every cat, and the feeding did put a stop on surf, right?
I know most don't feed after the nadir but Ducia eats at this time all her life.

I will feed my two as late as +9 or +9.5 if they are hungry. One is a grazer and the other had some other issues and doesn't have as good an appetite as before. As long as I allow at least 2 hours before the preshot test without any food they can have small amounts of food (low carb). Both need to keep their weight up so if they want to eat..they eat. This can of course vary for each person and each kitty, but testing will show if it has a big effect or not.

Morning everyone, I've just done his +11 and gotten 8.4 (151). Any ideas on how much I should give him in an hour? And should I continue feeding the same ratio of food as yesterday?

Edit: Also, at around +9 last night, Dave got about 2 teaspoons of his low carb food.

Change the Title again to something like newbie Dave SLGL +11 151, Urgent help with earned reduction dose, shot in 1 hour. Keep the ? prefix.

  1. Test again in an hour and post his pre shot BG as soon as you get it
  2. Update your thread title as Tanya suggested to get eyes on it.
  3. Spend some time reading SLGS in the yellow info stickies.
  4. A dose reduction of 0.25 u is in order according to SLGS.
  5. He'll likely be at a good enough BG to get 1 u at PM dose but ask here first.
Re food: continue the slow phase in of low carb food but test often while you're off school. Try to get this conversion done before you go back.

Thank you Kris!

No, Tanya - not wrong. The goal was to get Dave into safe numbers. It might be an issue if you were carefully steering with food but not in an emergency situation.

Okay, an hour later, I've just done his AMPS and it's 11.3 (204). I'm just about to give him insulin - should I go with the 1u dose?

I think that will work. To be extra vigilant after that low green you should probably test at +1 and +2 to see where he's heading. If there's a supermarket near you it would be a good idea to buy some cans of higher carb gravy style food to have on hand.

Going that low can leave him more insulin sensitive for a cycle or two. More monitoring, especially up to nadir, would be good data to have.

I assume Dave ate his pre-shot breakfast?
The +2 reading will give you good idea as to where he is heading today.
If the +2 is lower than PS than the cycle is going to be active. Watch out, have some MC/HC near by and test frequently. Depends on the PS to +2 difference.
If the +2 is higher that the cycle most likely will be a bouncing, higher numbers; you may be going easy on testing on days like that. If I were you I would fed as usual in this case and take +2, +4 and the rest of the rest depending on what you read.
Same PS and +2 is most likely normal cycle, gradual lowering to nadir and then up again.
Please keep the SS updated.

Yup, he got his normal brekkie. I'm planning to do +1, +2, +4 and then +6, and I'll make sure to keep updating.

+1 was 18.2 (328). His thirst is actually really low -last night's the first time I've really seen him drink. For a day or two he was urinating 3 times a day, but now he's back to one or two. I'll keep testing him for ketones anyway, it makes me feel more relaxed.

Bouncing is expected after the low today. It can go on for up to 3 days in susceptible kitties. We don't know yet whether Dave is one of those.

I hope that Jacqui didn't get a chance to update the SS after such a long night and that Dave is ok.:) There is nothing in SS...
The dose was reduced, she was going to watch but Dave also is transitioning to the lower carbs food.
IDK what effect that could have.

I have a feeling that Jacqui will read the Sticky on SLGL and will get the most out of it.:)

I am going to be on for a little while but then I'll take a break.

Jacqui, if you have any question please post it. And have Dave's reading in the SS.
Someone definitely going to be getting back to you.

I'll pop in when I am back.

Hi there, everyone, SS is updated with new readings: +3 is 18.3(329) and +6 is 19.7 (355). He's just had something to eat, will he be fine until PMPS?

Hi Jaqui, and welcome to Lantus & Levemir Land, the nicest place you never wanted to be.

I just got caught up with all that has happened with Dave in the past day or so. Nice job catching that 43 and following the guidance you received to keep him safe. Not panicking really helps you in these situations. @Tanya and Ducia, you did awesome! I know @Kris & Teasel was there to help, too, but when she passed you the ball, you ran with it! :)

It can be a bit confusing for those of us in the US to figure out the time difference, but I know you are now halfway through Friday, Jaqui, so if you haven't already, please start a new condo (thread) for 4/21. Each morning, when you are ready to post your AMPS, start a new condo and put a link to the last one in your first post. To do that, start the new thread, the pull up the old one and copy the URL address. Then go to the new thread and type a name for the link, like "Dave's Yesterday", or whatever you want to call it. Highlight that, then click on the icon in your toolbar that looks like a link in a chain. Paste the URL address in the box that comes up and click "insert". Holler if you need help with this. This will help anyone that comes along and wants to go back and see what happened the day before. Starting a new thread each day keeps them from becoming too long and confusing.

To help newbies learn how to work with this site, we put together an informational post: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/updated-tips-for-new-members.173572/ It's full of FAQs and links to stickies and posts that you will find useful. Be sure to ask lots of questions. We were all new once, and we love to help!

Hi Jacqui,
haven't heard from you and Dave and was wondering how were you doing?
I hope you are not too discouraged by his high numbers, it is the "bouncing", totally expected.
HERE I have inserted the link to an old discussion re: TR approach v. SLGL ; it might help you to choose which one to follow.:)

Hi Jacqui, I am sorry I didn't see Ella's tag until just now. I am not on the forum as often now, since I lost my beautiful girl Sheba. I didn't realise there was another Aussie on L&L forum....welcome. I will help you in any way I can.
I live in Sydney, where are you?
Here is a couple of links to low carb food that is available here

For high carb food I used the FF a la carte Tuscan turkey and rice. I also often just added a drop of honey to her normal food instead of using the higher carb food to bring the number up. If she was really low I found that brought the number up quicker. You will get to know how much honey you will need to bring up the number.
If I can help in any way please ask. I will make sure I check in to see how you are going.:)

Thanks for the tag @Bobbie And Bubba, sorry I'm so late to see it! @panda28, if you haven't already, check out the second link that Bron posted in the previous message. I personally contacted all of the food manufacturers to get accurate up-to-date data about a year ago, I don't think much would have changed since then. Some manufacturers never got back to me after multiple messages, so I guess they don't really want the diabetic business... but there is still ample choice available :) Hope it helps!

Whereabouts are you? I'm on the Central Coast of NSW, just north of Sydney. You're welcome to message me anytime if you need :)
