I'm looking into making homemade snacks for Chuck. I'm overwhelmed by the info and wondered if someone here makes their own food that is higher calorie, protein and lower or zero carb... that is EASY to make at home that would pack a punch per ounce?
It could be cooked or raw.
I would appreciate it so very much if you could share your recipe?!
Right now we give him FF classics but only half an ounce for his +7 snack.

When steak is on sale, usually around Memorial Day, Independance Day, and Labor Day, I usually stock up, and then barbeque or broil them (if I have to), and then slice it up thin and put in sandwich size freezer bags and freeze most of it. I take the slices out and cut them into cat kibble sized pieces and feed them. I also buy the frozen cooked large shrimp, especially when there is a $5.00 coupon, and those stay in the freezer, and I will thaw out about 3 or 4 in cold water and then slice those up into little cat bite sized pieces and they love that. I have heard of cats that like raw shrimp. I've never gotten into feeding raw. And I've heard of cats that like scallops. I will also buy chicken breasts or thighs when they are on sale and boil them, and my cats like that especially fresh from the stove top (make sure they aren't too hot). Everything is cooked with no seasoning, of course.

My cats LOVE whole shrimp, I get the medium sized raw ones and then steam them. They go nuts for them and they don't leave a piece behind. They each get about 5 shrimp.

You can also get frozen rats and mice. Pet stores have live insects like grasshoppers too, that's what cats would be chasing around outside. But I suppose if you're not into that then you can get those frozen as well lol.

I'm not sure he would want to eat a mouse. He's more into torturing them or he was... Hasn't seen one since we moved out of the country. I could try the shrimp. He likes chicken breast. Maybe I'll start there. I saw raw chicken wing tips are good for their teeth too. So maybe I can start with a chicken wing tip split into two snacks a week. My luck Chuck would take the grasshoppers for a journey through the house and I'll never catch them again. I picked up a big black one that I thought was dead and it immediately jumped into my hair. It wasn't a pretty sight. I freaked out!
I was giving him Young Again Mature Zero but with the TR method of Lantus it's not allowed.

I laughed so hard about the grasshopper, I would have freaked out too. There are those huge cockroaches at my new house, they mainly come in from this gap under the front door that needs to be fixed. I've never seen one upstairs and any time that I've ever been to the house and ran into one it's always been in the damn kitchen. I hope that the 3 cats can keep them under control. Like you said though, it will be my luck that my 2 cats will make pets out of them.

Wing tips and chicken feet both make good snacks. I've also heard of people mention to me that chicken and turkey necks are good. I haven't tried that yet but I will once I get moved. If your kitty hasn't eaten raw before I would suggest coating the meat in Forta Flora. Peanut had no problem going straight in and going for the kill so to speak but Ginger will only eat small pieces and doesn't want to crunch the bone, he had zero interest at first.

I lived in Florida as a kid and I remember catching the huge cockroaches and keeping them as pets. My poor mother.

Like the chicken "paws" lol at the local walmart are those truly ok? Is it not dangerous to give a kitty who has never had raw meat and bones and nails? I'm not sure she would want to eat that or know what to do with it. . But I can't give her fish so shrimp is out? Or is it different? I tried gizzards. She tried one piece and spit it out, looking at me like I had a third eye. So judgemental these felines. Lol

You can take the gizzard and cut it into small pieces, put it into a plastic baggie and hold it under warm water and then add that to her food. That's a start. You can warm up the bigger pieces the same way and cover them with something like Forta Flora or fish / salmon oil and see if she takes to it then. Ginger wouldn't eat it until I coated small pieces with what I call magic powder. It's raw, freeze dried turkey treats that I blended into a powder and I use that to cover or coat things that they won't eat, works everytime. I do believe that the shrimp is different than fish because it's a shellfish but I could be wrong so I would err on the side of caution there and avoid shrimp. Yes, the chicken paws (lol) are completely safe, you will most likely find them in the frozen section and if not just ask the butcher. If you are afraid of the nails just chop them off with nail clippers or a knife. I must seem so harsh or unphased by this stuff, sorry, I just grew up with a lot of boys and I've been hunting and cleaning whole animals since I was a kid so this stuff seems mild. If it bothers you to touch the chicken feet just get yourself some gloves from the pharmacy and you'll be okay.

Added to my above post if you do decide to try a shrimp on her try it without the shell first and give it at least 3 to 4 days to make sure that she's not allergic to the actual shrimp meat. Sometimes you can be allergic to the shell and not the shrimp because there is some kind of chemical or something, I truly forgot what it is but it's inside the shell. My ex used to be a chef and every time that he would prepare shrimp he would have to wear special gloves to protect his hands so that the shell didn't pierce his skin, that's how allergic to shrimp he is, that's crazy. Also an any allergy can develop overnight...

I was working at this nightclub... okay strip club and my friend ordered shrimp. She had never been allergic before but that night something changed and she developed an allergy to the iodine within the shrimp. This sh!t was NUTS lol. She called me over and asked me to replace her so that she could go find out what was wrong with her. My jaw hit the floor, she had red bullseye marks covering her entire body from head to toe. I knew instantly what was happening and let her go on to the ER. I had an allergic reaction like that once to Penicillin so I recognized the patterns. I don't mess around with allergies which is funny because I'm allergic to everything. Just be careful and have that Benadryl ready just in case.

Interesting conversation. What about chicken liver? I would like to give something with more protein and help with blood for Gizmo. I can't give bones because of phosphorus (at least I don't think I can), but have thought about liver or hearts.

I used to boil the gizzards from the turkey on Thanksgiving and slice them into thin slices and my cats loved it.

Well I made the pilgrimage to my favorite pet store and found freeze dry duck liver (single ingredient) snacks. They are high in protein and Gizmo LOVES them. I know it isn't "homemade " but thought I would share.

Liver and Gizzards both would be fine, raw is better for nutrition but cooked is okay too. You can give your cat bones without worrying about phosphorus, because they need phosphorus too just don't give too much. A half of a wing per week or a wing tip 3 times per week would be fine.

Homemade or not, it's natural and that's what counts. I'm glad that your kitty likes it.
