The original post is about taking Peanut to get his teeth cleaned. Well I took him in to have his teeth cleaned and I brought all of his own things with him for him to have while he was there. I also wanted the vet to test his BG on his meter since it's what I'm used to getting the numbers from. She did test him 3 times with his meter but she also tested him at the same time with the Alphatrak2 and she took photos to show me the difference and the numbers were drastically different - 100 to 150 in difference. She had the photos on her phone and I didn't think to ask her for copies but I'm going to ask her tomorrow if she'll email them to me and I'll post them here.

I have gone ahead and ordered some new Alphatrak2 test strips but in the meantime I thought I might just mess around and test him with the old strips that I have and the results that I got were right about the same. I'll post a photo. The date on the meters are correct but the times are not correct because I'm too lazy to read manual and figure out how to change the time. I did do these tests at the same exact time using 2 separate pricks.

I get these types of results between my Relion micro and the Alpha Trak 2 meter. I have noticed that when the numbers are higher there is a larger difference between the two meters.

When I first started home testing I had both meters and I used both of them every day for about 2 weeks to make sure that they were roughly within the same range and they were, Peanut's numbers back then were in the 300's and 200's so I don't know why it should be any different now than it was back then. If it had been even 30 or 40 points different I wouldn't have used the Relion, that's how positive I am about it.

Me too :). The numbers to tend to be greater in difference at higher numbers and lesser in difference at lower numbers.

You will drive yourself crazy if you compare meters. First of all they can be off by 20%, allowed meter variance. So one could be 20% high and tge other 20% low. You could test with the same meter and the same blood and get different readings. The AT always reads higher than the human meter. That's why the reduction numbers are different. The protocol was written using a human meter. We look for trends and test to keep them safe.

I'm doing a curve on Monday so am curious on how much difference you saw between the two meters you were using.
I only used both the Relion and AT2 meter for AMPS and PMPS when doing my last curve. I used the AT2 meter only for the +2, +4, +6, +8, +10 while doing the curve. I didn't really think about using them both throughout the curve although it's a great idea.

For the reasons I wrote above I wouldn't waste strips using two meters. Honestly you will drive yourself crazy.

okay, so in the protocol the dosing and everything was written with the human meter readings in mind then?

I personally love the accuracy of the alpha. I don't like having a different reading from my vet, nor did I want to have an inaccurate view of how she was doing by getting better than reality numbers. I do get that cost is a factor though.

That's correct.
okay well as many of you know that I'm still in the process of moving so Peanut isn't going to exactly be consistent for the rest of the month.

I have a lot of crap that I have to do and my sleep is all over the place so Peanut isn't coming out as really consistent but that will change as soon as I get moved and settled in which won't take long. I'll actually have a partner that will help me instead of just sitting there playing video games all day long. Hopefully Peanut will adapt to the change quickly and we can get back onto the TR and really make some progress. Plus with his teeth being cleaned I'm hoping that will help as well. I did buy him a toothbrush and toothpaste, I had some before but he didn't like the flavor but he likes this new flavor and I'm so happy for that.

I am not going to worry about the AT2 testing anymore since that's not what the protocol is based on.

Interesting to note though last night before I tested him with the AT2 I tested myself with both meters and I got
AT2 125
Relion 110
Which falls right in line with what you guys said about the numbers being closer together when the numbers are lower. Maybe I should just send my Dr. a photo of that so that she'll stop worrying lol.
