Caren and Creamsickle

Member Since 2017
Hi everyone. I'm Caren and one of my 6 cats, Creamsicle aka creamie, has been diagnosed in the beginning of March 2017. We tried dietary management at first but since glucose and A1c were high, started insulin.
Started at 1/2 unit now give 3 units however the blood glucose levels are quite inconsistent and often remain high even with the insulin. Glucose usually between miss 300's to over 500. We are very confused as to why we cannot get his levels under control. We test with the Alphatrak 2 now because results with the relion confirm were way off from our vets. He eats the hills prescription diet for diabetes.
I appreciate any help others can give us!

Hi Caren, welcome to you and Creamsicle- LOVE the name!!! So glad you are home testing. If you will download our spreadsheet and plug in the numbers you've been getting, we will be better able to give you input. Here are instructions, but if you need help, just ask and we will do it for you.

One thing I notice is you are feeding the Hills Prescription Diet which is actually much higher in carbs than we recommend. The wet w/d is 25 carbs, the m/d is 13 and the dry is even higher. We like to feed a wet food under 10 carbs. Many of us use Friskies Pates or Fancy Feast Classic Pates.
Come to the Main Health Forum and ask any questions you have.

Welcome! Love your kitty's name! :) Please post on the main health forum to get more people seeing your thread. We like to know what insulin you're using because the advice offered will depend on that.

My kitty was just diagnosed 4 days ago and the very first thing my vet advised was wet food only. Specifically pate only. The classic fancy feast is great and cheap. Good luck.

Welcome Caren and Creamie!
Great that you are already home testing :)Is that the DM wet or dry? Also, since she started on 0.5U and is now at 3U, what were the increments of increases?

Few things to get you started. Sharon already provided you with the SS link instructions :)
A signature with some basic information helps us with bad memories: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/

And this is always good to have on hand, even if kitty is still in higher numbers: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/

If you need help with ANYTHING, don't be afraid to ask. Some of us may seem bossy but it's because we truly care about you and your kitty :cat:. See you on the Main Health forum!

Hi Karen! Sounds like your numbers are similar to my Frank's. We're finally seeing some low numbers on 3 units, but that just started this week. :)
Those darn dry prescription foods that the vets get us to buy!! Yesterday I left Frank have more than usual, and his numbers shot right back up again. I would consider switching if I were you to a strictly canned pate diet, or even look into the Young Again 0 carb (which I'll be buying very soon as well). You're home testing, so that's great...and as long as you're testing, you can switch foods and monitor how that affects the BG levels. These are probably the things I learned most quickly in this group over the last few weeks. Good luck with getting things managed!

Well I didn't say but he is on Prozinc!!!
Creamie has always eaten wet food (wellness) with an occasional treat. We started him on fancy feast at first but since it didn't do anything our bet said to try the pro plan do wet
I don't think that made a difference though. We don't want to change anything until we get him a little stable. Thanks for your advice!

Sarah, what kind of cold medicine are you taking? :p
Caren, there are some low carb Wellness wet food options. Ideally, you want less than 8-10%. Here's the food chart for easy reference, just press CTRL + F and type Wellness to jump to that section. The Complete Health ones are ok to feed :)

Hi Caren and Creamsickle! Welcome! I'm very sorry you have to be here, but we look forward to getting to know you both!
