I have the lancing device that came with the Alphatrak meter. I have not been very successful sticking my kitty's ear and it ends up being a very traumatic experience for Caesar and me. I need some guidance. Is this the best lancing device? What level, there are 4, should I sent the depth to? Any tips for this scared cat mom? Today, I am going to make the rice sock, so I hope that makes things better, but any other advice or helpful video links would be appreciated! I've only been taking care of my diabetic cat for less than a week. Many thanks!

I found that just using the lancet without the spring loaded noise making device much easier. :) or use a pill bottle filled with warm water to hold again ear also gives you a surface to poke against. If you try to poke yourself you'll see how sift or easy you can really be and still get a droplet. Or use a bigger gauge lancet say a 28 gauge. Good lucK and kudos to you for home testing!! It gets easier, I promise. And remember to reward after each session good or bad.

I've found it much easier to just use the lancing needle. I put a peice of cotton behind her ear and the needle pokes into that. I know it sounds traumatic and it kinda is lol but my cat doesn't make much of a fuss about it. Even tho I'm literally poking through her ear. I'm more upset by it for sure.

Hi there, and welcome! What type of trouble are you running into? Is Caesar cooperating, but you aren't getting blood to come out? Or is he wiggling/biting/running away? Or is blood coming out, but not beading up? We have lots of tips and tricks around here, so ask any questions you have!

Start with the deepest setting (4) and then reduce as necessary. Make sure you firmly backup the ear where you are piercing. I use a cotton cosmetic pad

My trouble is that I have to poke Caesar over and over again to get any blood out. I usually spring load the lancet 3-4 times in attempt for even a drop of blood. I think the clicking noise is scaring him too. He usually cooperates up until a certain point. Yesterday he moved his head while I was trying to poke him and a lot of blood came out. If I start with the lancet on the deepest settting, is it going to pierce through his ear? I am so scared to hurt him.

I am worried that on the deepest setting, number 4, it will pierce through his ear. Is that possible? His ears seems so delicate.

When a lot of blood came out, you may have hit the Marginal Vein. You want to aim for the sweet spot which is the area between the vein and the outer edge of the ear. A little flashlight or spot lamp can help see the area, even with dark fur kitty ears :)

I think we've all given our kitties an ear piercing here and there. Just firmly hold the spot after you get the blood sample for as long as you can or up to 20 seconds ish. This will also help reduce bruising.

It's OK if you poke through. I've pierced my cats ears many times. They have very few nerve endings in the sweet spot.

I just hold the lancet and poke, without using the trigger thingy. That was I can be more precise about where it's hitting too -- except when Sam jumps -- can't do much about that. But anyway...Yes, you will likely go through his ear fairly often. It doesn't seem to hurt him and more or less whether I go through or not. But definitely use cotton or a cosmetic square, or something so you don't poke your own finger at the same time.

Make sure you are using a thick lancet like a size 26 or 28. The size of the lancet makes a big difference. And know that every poke is serving to make future pokes easier. Their ears grow more little...umm...capillaries (could a science person verify if that's the right word?)...and it makes them bleed much much easier. So the first couple of weeks can be difficult to get blood, but after a little while it's super quick and easy. So know that what you're experiencing right now is pretty normal, and you're on your way to easier tests as you stick with it.

Finally, the warming thing is super important. Some cats just need their ear rubbed a little to stimulate blood flow. Some cats need a serious warming first. I can't get blood at all if I don't warm my cat's ear first. But after warming it, it's quick and easy.

So hang in there! And if none of these things help, keep asking. We've all been where you are right now.

just FYI you can use a 25 gauge needle until kitty "learns to bleed"--
termuro needles are very sharp and quick to get a drop of blood--I actually had to stop using them because Dre bled too much.

First of all, welcome, and kudos for doing home BG testing. It's important to keep your cat safe by testing at home.

I know this will be counter to what others are saying, but I went to finer needles almost from the start. My cat barely feels them and his ears show no evidence of frequent poking. I use 33 gauge and I poke free hand. I cut cotton cosmetic pads in half and use a half to hold behind his ear for poking and then I fold the pad over the bleeding for several seconds after. I reuse the pad a few times. I get the best pokes just to the outside of the "edge" vein. And I try to mimic a lancet device with my motion, going very quickly and lightly. You do not need to poke hard or thru, those lancets are VERY sharp (as you will find out the first time you poke yourself). Once you discover the sweet spot, it doesn't take a hard poke to draw blood. You will get better with practice, and I do think you will like free hand better than the lancet device. Better control. The only time I have trouble is if his ears are cold, like first thing in the morning or wee hours, so I just rub his ear a bit, he likes it. Some use a bag of warmed (uncooked) rice to warm ear, but my cat hated that. Oh, cheapest lancets are at WalMart if you have one (don't see where you are located). I get the ReliOn Micro-Thin 33 gauge lancets. they are turquoise in a blue box, about $1.48 for 100.

I started with AlphaTrak meter, as well, as directed by my vet. But, after being convinced by others here that a cat can be monitored using a human meter, I switched to the ReliOn Micro, also WalMart. The strips are MUCH cheaper. If you were feeding your cat dry food at Dx and are now switching to wet only, he may go in to remission quickly, so you may not be buying strips long, as he may go into remission from diet change only. But, the savings from using a human meter can be substantial, so it is something to consider.

There is lot to learn and absorb and it can be very overwhelming at first. But be assured that there will come a time when you are feeling more confident about what you are doing! I see you are using lantus, so go to the lantus forum and post (if you have not yet) and ask for help getting your Spread sheet up (if you have not yet). You will be amazed at the support.:cat:

And, I forgot to add...get yourself a head lamp, it will help tremendously with the lancing and shooting!

Thanks for the good advice here, guys. I just started doing the testing and it took 3-4 tries before we got a usable sample. But tonight we finally got a sample and his first reading! Switching to free hand did the trick and distressed him less. He still wasn't happy, but hopefully he will get better with time and as I feel less stressed out! Thanks again!
