Max was just diagnosed last week and I am very new to all of this. I don't have a lot of data yet since we just started on Lantus. His lowest numbers of the day are all PMPS since starting Lantus. I don't know what to do with a 156.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hi Tom, can you stall without feeding and retest in about 20 minutes to see if the number will start to come up to 200. Consider that your schedule will be off if you shoot late.

I let him eat a bit before I got your response. I just tested again and it was 188. I gave him the shot and I will stay up and do some testing.

Hi Tom and Max,

Just wanted to pop in and welcome you to FDMB. Great job testing last night. It looks like it was a really nice cycle for Max. Since you're following SLGS, that 80 last night would technically earn a reduction. The new dose would be .75 units. :)

Here's the link to your previous post. We try to include those links just so it's easy for others to go back and read previous discussion.

Congrats on the reduction!

Thank you for your help. I did not see this until after I gave him his AM shot and I gave him a 1U shot. His AMPS was 172, I will test every 2 hours today just to make sure he doesn't go too low. Should I start with the reduction tonight or wait for the numbers the rest of the day and reduce to .75 if a similar low pattern shows?

Thanks

The one time old dose won't hurt as long as you monitor which you plan to do. Great choice in names though my tummy drops when I see it. Lost mine in October.

Wow Tom, these are beautiful numbers for Max! Apparently he likes Lantus!! He's responding well. How is he looking/feeling? Appetite good?
Just judging by the numbers, he seems to be doing well. So glad to see this!! :D

He has not been eating nearly as much as he did before he started getting sick. He was a monster at 21lbs but he wasn't obese, even the vet did not feel he was overweight just a big cat. He's now just over 15 lbs, I switched him to wet food a few weeks ago and I'm lucky if he eats 2-5oz cans per day. He's been a lot more active and playful, again not as much as before but we can def see an improvement.

Today his numbers jumped back up. I thought I got his shot in, but it may have been a fur shot. I could smell a bit of insulin and his numbers jumped right back up. Should I continue on with the reduction to .75 or go with a full 1U? I can't test all night like I did last night, I'll only be able to get a +9. I have to get some sleep...

Thanks

It looks like Max was bouncing today. He dropped into lower numbers last night (lower than he's used to), and his liver panicked...releasing lots of extra sugar, basically. That kept the numbers high today. When bounces occur, you just have to be patient. You can't do anything but wait it out. The numbers will come back down. Bouncing was one of the hardest parts of diabetes for me. I'm not a patient person at all. Check out the second post here. @julie & punkin (ga) did a great job explaining bouncing in her post.

SLGS does specify that you would take the reduction to .75 any time the numbers drop below 90 (like last night).

Hang in there - you're doing great!

Hey Tom,
Sorry, just seeing this. Yep, looks like a bounce. He started rising on the AM cycle even though you gave him 1U, so it looks like a bounce to me. If you did give a partial fur shot, that could be part of it too. We've ALL done that, so don't feel bad about it. I'd keep him at the .75U for several cycles and see where he goes. Unfortunately, nothing you can do except wait for the bounce to clear. Could take a couple of cycles. Just keep testing the way you have been.
Even with the bounce, for a cat new to Lantus, his numbers are not horrible. He'll come back down.

When you start to treat the diabetes and start to get it under control, it's a good sign when they are not ravenous all the time any more. Glad to hear Max is becoming active and playful again!! He's already starting to feel better and that's wonderful!!

You are doing awesome!! :D

After the bounce yesterday his numbers are coming back down today. An 81 at +6 means I drop him to .5u from .75u, correct? He was jus reduced from 1 to .75 yesterday.

Also, the system in this forum is unique to me, is there anywhere that explains when a new thread is created vs changing the title and updating an existing?

Thanks

Hi Tom, and welcome from me too. Good to see Max getting over his bounces so quickly. Technically with SLGS you would drop the dose tonight. There could be some depot still left from the 1.0 units dose that is influencing today's cycle, but reduce and you'll see if the new dose works.

A couple of posts you might want to read: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...-of-your-lantus-levemir-isg-experience.46014/ which suggests starting a new post every day. And this one by Tricia will also help you find your way around: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/updated-tips-for-new-members.173572/

Thank you for the reply and the links to those posts, they are very helpful in explaining the process. I'll move down to .5U and see what happens tomorrow.

Hey Tom,
Just checking in on you guys...

Wow! Max cleared that bounce quickly!! Only because I'm paranoid, I would test at +7 or +8 just to make sure he isn't still dropping. He's having quite a good reaction to the Lantus!

We usually post a new thread every day starting with AMPS and then just keep updating that one post throughout the day. If you post more than 1 thread in a day it gets confusing. With the single thread and just updating the title as the day goes on... or updating the title if you're in trouble, need quick advice, etc. makes it way easier for us to follow what's been going on with the cat all day.

I'm so happy to see Max doing so well!!

Hi Donna, good to hear from you. Any time I have been getting below 100, I test 1 hour later to make sure he's moving back up so we are in agreement there. I just checked him and he's up a little bit. Thanks for the help clarifying the posting, I swear I've read a lot of this stuff 3x times over now. It's a lot of info to take in and the lack of sleep is really catching up to me.

Hey Tom,
As long as his numbers are in a safe range, get some sleep!! You need to take care of YOU too or else you won't be any good to Max or anyone else. This "sugar dance" as we call it, could be a long road so it's important to find a balance. I notice you are on a 10:30 AM / 10:30 PM schedule. Have you considered moving his shot time up a little earlier so that at nite, you could still get a test or two in and get a reasonable night's sleep? If you did want to do that, you'd have to do it methodically and I'd have to defer to some others here who are more familiar with how to do that... I 'think' you could move the time by 30 minutes per day (no more than that) but I'm not 100% sure. Just wondering and this is just a suggestion... nothing more. If you're comfortable staying with these times, that's fine... I just want to be sure you can get some sleep and take care of yourself.

It is a LOT of info to take in and it can be overwhelming at first. Keep posting here for advice and if there is anything you're unsure about... just ask.
You REALLY are doing great!! As a matter of fact, for someone who has just started this journey, you are doing incredibly well and Max is lucky to have such a dedicated dad!

I'll keep checking in on you and Max. Hope you get some sleep tonite!!
