My little guy made it through the anesthesia just fine and is home now. WHEW!
As some of you know he inexplicably dropped to 81 at his +2 last night RIGHT BEFORE I had to fast him for 8 hours before his dental anesthesia :banghead: I gave him an entire 3 oz can of 21% and crossed my fingers. The HC did the trick for the most part but he was dropping early this morning again all the way to the vet's. :nailbiting:
He had 5 extractions. 3 were referred to as"Resorptive Lesions" the other 2 were "Mobile Teeth"
Uncle now has 11 teeth left. I know this dental will have positive effects on his overall health and I'm hoping against hope it may get him closer to kicking the insulin.
I'm so happy with the vet. She called me this morning after I dropped him off and she noticed I had had the tech write "NO METACAM" and "NO CONVENIA" on Uncle's chart. She wanted to ask me if I was okay with him getting a one time subQ shot in the tail of Onsior today, then following up with Bupe at home. I told her I would defer to her expertise because I wasn't familiar. She monitored him closely and gave him dextrose twice during the procedure and gave me a print out of his BG numbers which they monitored at 30 minute intervals for the entire time he was there (5 hours).
I'm over the moon with the care they took with him and me as well!!!
Thank all you guys for the good wishes and prayers last night and this morning. I'm very grateful for the immense support :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Barbara, This is a wonderful report on Uncle's dental visit. Your vet sounds great.
Welcome home, Uncle. Rest well tonight and the Tooth Fairy will bring you a nice surprise.

Have a good evening keeping an eye on your boy!

p.s. Rusty has 5 teeth left. He lost most of them before we adopted him.

Oh yeah, AND I have some gnarly pictures of his mouth -before and after. YUCK

You should share them!! It's a great way to help educate others on the importance of getting good dentals done!!

So glad he's home and that's over with! I'm sure you are too!!

Don't expect miracles with his numbers....at least not right away (of course it's possible!!)...if his gums/teeth were bad, there's probably some infection/inflammation that will have to clear before you can expect much

Thank goodness he's back home sweet home. :):bighug: Good to hear your vet asked about Onsior. It's an NSAID, as is Metacam and only to be used short term for pain relief. I found that Neko's numbers actually went up a little bit after a dental due to inflammation, but a week or so later came back down.

Are you giving a shot tonight? I hope his appy is good and his mouth isn't too sore to eat.

Great report on the vetty visit! Glad to hear Uncle and YOU got such great care and attention. Ya for an awesome vet! Seems we don't hear good vet stories around here much.

Please do share the pics! I have never taken either of my cats for a dental. I didn't even know you could do that until reading about it here on this board.:oops::oops: My vets never mentioned this to me before or recommended a dental for either of my older cats. I feel like a bad kitty mama for not knowing better. Want to look into this for both kitties in the near term.

Still waiting for a pic of your 'puppy', too!

Hope Uncle is feeling better to be home from the vet and sending some vines for a good appy! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well...I did give Uncle his shot. He had eaten at the vet's earlier in the day and again at around 5:00 at home so I figured it wouldn't be a problem when it was time to give him insulin. WRONG! I think the pain meds were wearing off and maybe his mouth isn't feeling good. I gave him some bupe and waited 45 minutes. His PMPS was 298. He ate about a half a meal and I gave him the shot. Of course now I'm nervous -NEVER a dull moment around here. His +2 is coming up in about 20 minutes and I hope he will eat more then.

I will be patient and whatever happens, I will still be happy that he had those bad teeth taken out! Tomorrow I'll try to get those pictures posted. I even have black and whites from the x-rays, but I don't know what I'm looking at o_O

Great report, Barbara. Last month, Murphy also had 5 teeth pulled. I was hoping for a reduction in his insulin, but thus far, I haven't seen any effect. Glad those nasty teeth are not bothering my boy any longer though. When I took him back to the vet 2 weeks ago, his tartar was already starting to come back, so that is a bummer. But I hope this can nudge Uncle to (anti jinx) the Falls.

Of course I was hoping that getting rid of any underlying infection and/or inflammation may help Uncle's BG numbers come down. He's only on about 5 drops of insulin right now so I was thinking we're close, but then again I know there are a few kitties here that have been on micro-doses for a long time.
I'll try to concentrate on the fact that those bad teeth getting removed will help him feel better in general. The vet told me that two of them were painful to him even under anesthesia :(
If tartar is already coming back for Murphy are you considering one of those non-anesthetic teeth cleanings just for maintenance?

Wonderful news that the dental is behind you and I too think you will see some difference, especially getting the absorption lesion teeth removed as they can be awfully painful. That is what knocked Bubba out of remission the first time. Amazing that he had those bad teeth and didn't have higher numbers!

Bubba was giving Onsior once recently and I think it was when he had the bacterial GI infections but not sure. He didn't have any problem with it. I don't remember if I gave follow up pills of it too.

And of course he would bottom out on you the night you were supposed to be fasting him. Cats!

Hi Barbara,

Glad Uncle made it through his dental surgery! Whew. I remember when Carol's Murphy had his big day at the dentist;coincidentally it was the same day that civie Azalea had her dental extractions. I think we figured that between Murphy and Azalea, the tooth fairy got at least a dozen teeth that day!

I hope Uncle continues to feel better post-op and with happier bg now that all those resorbing teeth are gone.

I hope you'll share some of the x-rays and photos. I think I shared a couple of Azalea's. She had conditions similar to what you described.

Heaps of feel better and get some good rest vines for you both!
Sina
