Sandi & Chase in AZ

I see some SS where a cat has only been in the green for a few days, and an OTJ trial is started. I was told that Chase needed to be in all greens for a week before I started a trial. What's the difference between him and others? :(

That's what I heard, too, Judy. I wonder, though.... if Chase stays mostly green but has a few numbers that hover in the low 100's indefinitely... does that mean he will just have to stay on insulin? We seem so close, some days, and I'm so worried about my job and not being able to work the OT that I used to in order to make it. I'm trying to be patient. LOL. Chase is on a drop dose, and his numbers are so good. It's making me crazy... in a good way. LOL

Oh wow... you know JUST what I'm talking about. I just looked at Boomer's SS. I am not alone. :) I'm not happy that Boomer is on insulin, but I can see that you must know exactly how I feel. :bighug:

Does ANY cat ever get into and stay in the greens on just a drop dose of insulin?
Quick answer is yes some stay green on a drop. Cats have the best chance of remission sticking if they can stay on a drop until they have almost all green tests. Some start unexpected trials because they are too low for insulin at test time and continue to be until it just makes sense to give it a try. That's my take on it anyway. You are sooo close I'd wait until you see lots of green or a drop under 50 if my cat.

I think Elise hit it on the head when she replied the following. Nacho is one of those cats.

FWIW Bubba was on a drop for 15 days because he was throwing an occasional low blue and since it was his 3rd rodeo on insulin, I wanted a strong remission this time.

PS To keep one thread a day , you can put your question on your daily thread and just change the title to a question mark to get eyes on it.

I'm one that started an OTJ trial before getting to the all-greens stage (largely due to outside pressures from work and life, something had to give and my cat seemed like she was close enough to take the risk). So far so good, but it's not something I'm necessarily recommending, because as Bobbie says, the longer the cat is in 100% greens on just a little bit of insulin, the stronger the remission is likely to be. Faced with the same pressures, I'd make the exact same decision every time (gotta work or nobody eats!) but if/when Amber drops out of remission, I figure I'll know who to blame (me, for jumping the gun!).

If you read the post on Earning Reductions and Starting OTJ Trials, you'll see that the "rules" are a little different for kitties on SLGS vs. TR. But only different in the way that the point at which SLGS kitties earn reductions is higher. If an SLGS kitty refuses to come up above 90, it's hard to give insulin. Similarly, if a newly diagnosed TR kitty keeps diving below 50 on any insulin, it's not safe to continue to give insulin. Ideally you would like them a week in normal numbers first, but only when it's safe to do so.
